Contrary to expectations, Man Utd suffered a 1-2 defeat at Nottingham Forest in round 20 of the Premier League. This defeat pushed coach Ten Hag's team down to 7th place in the rankings with 31 points.
According to Opta, this was Man Utd's 21st defeat in 2023 (14 Premier League matches). This is the most defeats in a calendar year for the Red Devils since 1972 (25 matches). In history, Man Utd also experienced a few other bad years such as 1921 (24 matches) and 1930 (28 matches).
In addition, Man Utd have lost 9 Premier League games this season after 20 matches. It is the club's worst start to a campaign since the 1989/90 season. In the whole of 2022/23, the Red Devils have lost just 9 games but they have reached this milestone just halfway through this season.
Not only have they lost a lot, Man Utd also have a very poor scoring record. They have only scored 22 goals in the Premier League this season, only the two bottom teams, Burnley (20 goals) and Sheffield United (15 goals) have been worse.
Coach Ten Hag became the first Man Utd strategist to lose to Nottingham Forest in 29 years. Before last night's humiliating defeat, the Manchester club had a streak of 11 consecutive wins at the City Ground.
After losing to Nottingham, Man Utd will travel to Wigan in the third round of the FA Cup on January 9.
