Midfielder Mateo Kovacic will become Man City's first new player in the summer of 2013, after Chelsea agreed to sell him for $38 million.
Two weeks ago, Man City reached a personal agreement with Kovacic on the terms of the contract. As of today, June 21, Chelsea has agreed to transfer the Croatian midfielder to Man City for a fee of 38 million USD. Kovacic is 29 years old, and has only one year left on his contract at Stamford Bridge, so Chelsea accepts a loss after spending 49 million USD to recruit this player from Real Madrid in the 2019-2020 season.

Man City will pay Chelsea $32 million up front. The remaining $6 million will depend on Man City's performance, not Kovacic's performance. He will undergo a medical in the next few days before signing the contract.
Kovacic will be Man City's first signing of the summer of 2023, and he is expected to fill the position left by Ilkay Gundogan. The German midfielder's contract with Man City expires at the end of June 2023, and he has no intention of staying. Like Gundogan, Kovacic's forte is the left-sided central midfielder position.
Kovacic has won 17 trophies in his career, including four Champions Leagues and one Europa League. He rose to prominence with Dinamo Zagreb, before moving to Inter and Real Madrid. According to ESPN , Guardiola has long admired Kovacic and believes he would fit the current Man City style of play.
If he wins the Champions League with Man City, Kovacic will become the second player in history to win the title with three different clubs, after Clarence Seedorf. Previously, Kovacic won three times with Real Madrid and once with Chelsea.
Also on June 21, Chelsea agreed to sell goalkeeper Edouard Mendy to Al Ahli, Hakim Ziyech to Al Nassr and Kalidou Koulibaly to Al Hilal. All three teams play in the Saudi Pro League - a tournament that also features Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema. Previously, Chelsea let midfielder N'Golo Kante go to Al Ittihad on a free transfer after his contract expired.
