On September 3, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) confirmed that Romanian Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoana had resigned from the position he had held since October 2019.

In a statement, NATO said Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg had accepted Geoana's resignation and that the Deputy Secretary General would leave his position effective September 10. Mircea Geoana, 66, is the first Romanian to hold a senior leadership position in NATO.
The news on NATO's official website quoted Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg as saying: "Mr. Mircea has served NATO for nearly five years. His focus on technology and emerging security challenges has been crucial in driving innovation across the alliance."
Mr. Stoltenberg also affirmed the "huge benefits" that Romanian subordinates have brought to NATO over the years.
Boris Ruge, Assistant Secretary General for Political and Security Policy (PASP), will serve as Acting Deputy Secretary General of NATO until the alliance appoints a successor to Geoana.
Mr. Mircea Geoana was the Chairman of the Romanian Social Democratic Party (PSD) from 2005 to 2010. In 2009, he represented the PSD in the Romanian presidential election but was unsuccessful.
Previously, on August 25, Mr. Geoana confirmed that he had decided to run for re-election as President of Romania in the election this fall.
