The money saved the whole family

That year I was in my senior year of high school, with less than three months left until the college entrance exam, but I fell into a state of despair.

I am an ordinary mountain boy with average family conditions.

My father was a worker, and my mother made a living as a farmer in the village. She lived frugally and raised me, her only daughter, until I went to high school.

The university entrance exam carries so many expectations, not only from myself but also from my parents, relatives and friends.

But the turning point of the story happened in the winter of that year. During math class, my math teacher - Ms. Truong - noticed my unusual state.

After class, she asked with concern. I hesitated, not knowing what to say. My father was sick and bedridden and needed surgery, but the family did not have enough money.

She was silent for a while, then solemnly said: "Xiao Wang, you don't need to worry about money, I have 5,000 NDT (about 17 million VND) here, I'll lend it to you first. Go home and take good care of your father and don't worry about money anymore."

She asked me to return this money at our reunion 10 years later.

I ran home with the 5,000 yuan. When my mother saw the money in my hand, she burst into tears. She repeatedly thanked Ms. Zhang for her help and said that she would definitely find a way to repay the loan.

My mother immediately arranged for my father to have surgery the next day. Fortunately, the surgery was very successful and my father's illness was cured.

My mother and I breathed a sigh of relief when we saw my father able to get out of bed and walk. With Ms. Truong's help, our family overcame this difficulty.

My father recovered successfully and was discharged from the hospital, and I gradually returned to normal school life.

Reunion after 10 years

A month before the university entrance exam, the school held a parent-teacher meeting. My mother specially came to attend and prepared vegetables and fruits she had grown for the teachers. My mother held Ms. Truong's hand tightly and said, "On behalf of the whole family, thank you! We will never forget your kindness in this life." She said that she was just doing her duty as a teacher.

Before I entered university, I met her again. She told me: "You must study hard and help more disadvantaged students when you grow up. I believe you can make your dream come true."

I chose to study education. My four years of university passed quickly and completely. The moment I stood on the podium, I was so moved that I cried - I had fulfilled my childhood dream.

10 years after graduating, I went back to find my teacher. She was retired now, and I was a teacher. Surprisingly, she didn't ask me to repay her anything.

However, I insisted on sending her 3,000 yuan (about 10 million VND) for living expenses every month as a thank you. At first she refused to accept it, but after much persuasion, she finally agreed. Ten years after I sent the money, Ms. Zhang’s son, Li Wei, unexpectedly came to see me.

Her advice

His first sentence made my heart skip a beat: “My mother passed away, and before she died, she said that you must pay back that money!” I was very surprised. The news of her death was almost unbelievable. Furthermore, why did she mention the old debt? This made me suspicious.

Later I learned the whole story: It turned out that Li Wei's business had failed and he had borrowed money from a loan shark and couldn't pay it back. After that, he borrowed the money I sent her every month. After a while, her lawyer also came to see me. He confirmed that Ms. Truong had made it clear that she had voluntarily given me the money and not lent it.

With the help of the lawyer, Li Wei's unreasonable demands were not successful. I am once again grateful to Ms. Zhang for taking care of me and silently protecting me for so many years. Having gone through many ups and downs in life, I cannot forget her kindness. Although she has passed away for many years, her love and teachings still inspire me to constantly improve.
