Former President Jimmy Carter's coffin arrives under the dome of the Capitol

The coffin of former US President Jimmy Carter was brought under the dome of the Capitol building before the funeral on January 9.

On January 7, the coffin of the late President Jimmy Carter was brought to the Capitol. Many members of the US Congress and the US Supreme Court came to pay their respects to Mr. Carter, the 39th President of the United States (1977-1981) and the longest-lived president.

Mr. Carter died on December 29, 2024, after nearly two years of care in a nursing home, at the age of 100. His last public appearance was at the funeral of his wife Rosalynn in November 2023. In August 2024, Mr. Carter's grandson Jason said that the former president would vote for Vice President Kamala Harris in the election on November 5 of that year.

Ms. Harris was present at the Capitol on January 7 and delivered the eulogy. "Jimmy Carter was a rare example of talent, humility and grace," Ms. Harris said. Republican leaders such as Senate Majority Leader John Thune and House Speaker Mike Johnson were also present.

The casket will lie in state in the Capitol dome for three days, allowing members of Congress and the public to pay their respects. It will then be transported by motorcade to the Washington National Cathedral for a service on January 9. President Joe Biden and President-elect Donald Trump are expected to attend the event. Biden will deliver the eulogy. After the service, the casket will be returned to former President Jimmy Carter’s hometown of Plains, Georgia, for burial.
