Doctor Pham Van Binh, Deputy Head of Neurosurgery Department, E Hospital, said that the department recently treated a person with serious trauma, leading to paralysis due to sitting with his head resting on the dashboard.

That is Mr. TVT (51 years old, in Hanoi), was admitted to the hospital in a state of traumatic shock. This person had severe pain in the lumbar region, blood pressure disorder, and no feeling in the lower legs.

According to the patient’s family, on the way home from work, he was sitting in the passenger seat of the car. He often had the habit of putting his feet on the dashboard for comfort. However, when the driver avoided an obstacle on the road, the car crashed into an electric pole.

The accident caused him multiple injuries: chest trauma - pleural effusion, abdominal trauma, spinal trauma.

Doctor Binh said that on the X-ray image, the patient had a completely broken lumbar vertebrae L3-L4. This is a very serious injury, leaving behind paralysis of both legs.

“This is the first rare case I have encountered in my career. The patient suffered a serious injury due to the habit of sitting with his feet on the dashboard,” said Dr. Binh.

Sitting with your feet on the dashboard is very dangerous, and when an accident occurs, you can be seriously injured, and there can be associated injuries. In the above case, the patient suffered a spinal fracture due to the back seat of the car and the force of the opposite side pressing down.

The patient has undergone spinal surgery and will need to undergo rehabilitation to restore the nerve function of the sphincter muscles. The possibility of Mr. T recovering his leg is almost impossible.

The lumbar spine is responsible for the motor sensation of the lower legs. Each injury to the spine, depending on the function of the dominant position, will affect the organs in the body.

Serious spinal injuries often leave a burden on patients and their families. They will have to undergo lifelong treatment like patient T,” said Dr. Binh.

Through Mr. T's case, Dr. Binh recommends that when participating in traffic, we need to make sure we sit properly and wear a seat belt. This will avoid unfortunate injuries if a collision occurs.
