(CLO) The United Nations has launched a global appeal to raise more than 47 billion USD to provide humanitarian aid to 32 countries.
The head of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), Tom Fletcher, has warned of a “perfect storm” caused by a combination of rising inequality, conflict and climate change.
“The world is on fire and we need to act now to put it out,” he said.

The appeal will be used to assist 190 million people in 32 countries, but the UN estimates that around 305 million people globally will need some form of relief next year.
However, the UN also acknowledged that aid will not reach everyone who needs it. Specifically, Fletcher said that there are 115 million people who will not receive this support.
Fletcher also shared that allocating aid would be difficult and “cruel,” especially in the face of protracted crises in areas such as Gaza, Sudan, Syria and Ukraine.
He stressed that the world is facing a multipolar crisis and the most vulnerable are suffering dire consequences.
Highlighting the lack of funding, Tom Fletcher spoke of “donor fatigue” and stressed that this was hampering relief efforts.
He stressed the need to develop a realistic plan, which requires prioritizing and making extremely difficult decisions.
Only 43% of the $50 billion appeal this year has been met, leading to significant cuts in humanitarian aid delivery.
Specifically, in Syria, food aid has been reduced by 80%; in Myanmar, protection services have been cut; and in Yemen, a country facing a cholera epidemic, water and sanitation aid has also shrunk.
