Today, October 24, the UN Security Council will meet to discuss the current conflict between the Hamas Islamist movement and Israel. As planned, on October 26, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) will hold another emergency meeting to discuss this issue. In a statement sent to member states by UNGA President Dennis Francis, the meeting is scheduled to take place at 10:00 a.m. on October 26, US time (9:00 p.m. the same day, Vietnam time).

The UN Security Council has so far failed to reach a consensus on a resolution regarding the Hamas-Israel conflict. While awaiting the outcome of today's UN Security Council discussion, several countries represented by Jordan have formally requested UN General Assembly President Dennis Francis to plan the aforementioned meeting of the UN General Assembly.

Last week, the UN Security Council rejected a Russian-drafted resolution calling for a humanitarian pause. A second draft resolution, proposed by Brazil, condemning the brutal Hamas attacks, was also vetoed by the United States, one of the five permanent members of the council.

To be passed, a draft resolution needs at least nine votes in favor and no veto from one of the five permanent members of the Security Council: Russia, China, the US, France and the UK.
