For the first time, a Music Festival is held right in the UNESCO Creative City of Music (the title Da Lat city was just recognized in 2023).

This is also an occasion for classical music to be brought out of theaters and auditoriums to make it more accessible to the public.

Enjoying music under the pine trees

The Vietnam Classical Music Festival, which brings together more than 100 domestic and foreign artists, opened in the mountain town of Da Lat on March 10 with many different performances. Notably, the programs are not limited to the space of a theater or closed auditorium, but are "spread out" in many different locations in the mountain town of Da Lat.

The campus of the Art Street and the Hillside Street Art Space, the ancient villas in the pine forest of Anna Mandara Resort are the highlights for the performance programs.

On the third day of the event, the makeshift stage under the old pine trees of Da Lat was an unforgettable experience for the audience. Pham Phuong Chi (a girl of generation Z) did not miss the opportunity to enjoy classical music when coming to Da Lat these days.

Chi shared like other young people, before, she often listened to music based on her emotions for contemporary music genres. However, one chance to listen to classical music, she was fascinated. For classical music, you have to listen with will, perseverance, patience to absorb and see how good it is. Because each work has a different color, story.

The art space Pho Ben Doi (attic of the Lam Dong Provincial Youth Activity Center) is always bustling with art programs bringing classical music to everyone.

Mr. Nguyen Trung Hien (founder of Pho Ben Doi) happily said that the audience coming to the performances is gradually increasing. This proves that the love of the mountain town's residents and tourists for classical music is not small. Although sometimes the program is affected by noise (music from coffee shops, people singing karaoke), it is quickly handled by the local authorities to help the performance process go smoothly.

Suggestions for a UNESCO City of Music

The Vietnam Classical Music Festival with 17 performances will last until March 17. In addition to music programs, the festival also features a seminar on “Classical Music for Everyone” and a class on classical music. Of which, the seminar “Classical Music for Everyone” held on the morning of March 12 attracted the attention of many music enthusiasts.

Despite its small scale, the workshop addressed a matter of concern to many people, which is how to bring classical music to all people. Musician Nguyen To Hoan Phuc (Ho Chi Minh City) said that in the past, when mentioning classical music, people often associated it with the upper class, aristocrats and luxurious auditoriums and theaters. However, at present, classical music has become more popular and reached more young listeners through the internet or performances in open spaces.

The artists performing at the Music Festival in Da Lat this time are very young. This is also a factor that contributes to attracting more young audiences. International pianist Nguyen Duc Anh shared that the artists are willing to cooperate with the locality to carry out projects to build and contribute to a creative city of music like Da Lat.

For example, making high-quality videos and recordings of classical music, then releasing and spreading them on official channels to be played in cafes, schools, markets, etc. Thereby, people will have easier access to classical music. Mr. Nguyen Trung Hien (founder of Pho Ben Doi) suggested that the performances of this festival attracted a large audience from young people to the elderly. That proves that the public is still very interested in classical music, thereby helping to spread the title of Da Lat City of Creative Music.

“In the coming time, we will continue to organize music performances in open spaces, music classes in general; at the same time, we hope to receive financial support from the locality, from the organization to carry out music programs to build a worthy Creative Music City,” Mr. Hien hopes./.
