In the spring crop of 2024, Dien Chau district planted 2,200 hectares of peanuts. After nearly 4 months of planting, farmers have begun to harvest. In the fields of Ngoc My village, Dien Hung commune, the joy of a good harvest has somewhat eased the hardships of the people.
In the field of Mr. Nguyen Xuan Bang's family, 8 workers were mobilized to speed up the progress. Mr. Bang said: "The family planted 10 sao of spring peanuts. People in the field exchanged labor to harvest quickly. After harvesting, they sold fresh peanuts in the field to save labor and the peanuts also had a good price. This year, the peanut yield reached 3.5-4 quintals/sao, earning more than 5 million VND."
With the tradition of growing spring peanuts early, farmers in Dien Hung commune are the first to sell peanuts in the district. Here, people mainly sell fresh peanuts to traders in the field, serving export, or the needs of restaurants in and outside the province at the beginning of the tourist season. Peanuts are purchased by traders at the field price of 15-16 thousand VND/kg, 2 thousand VND/kg higher than last year. This year, people are excited because there are more peanuts than last year.
Mr. Tran Thong - Chairman of Dien Hung Commune People's Committee said: "Dien Hung planted nearly 300 hectares of spring peanuts. The Commune People's Committee has established a team to inspect the productivity of spring crops. The result is that the fresh peanut yield currently being harvested is an average of 3.5 quintals/sao. This can be said to be a comprehensive victory for the spring crop for the people."
In the 2024 spring crop, Dien Thinh is the locality leading in peanut acreage in Dien Chau district with nearly 400 hectares. At this time, farmers in Dien Thinh commune have also begun harvesting spring peanuts. Producers are satisfied because this crop's peanuts not only have high yields but also beautiful, uniform and high-quality tubers. Ms. Tran Thi Huong in Hamlet 10, Dien Thinh commune is harvesting peanuts and said: "The source of seeds is guaranteed, planting on schedule, taking care according to the instructions of the professional sector, along with the "support" of the weather, so the spring peanut yield of Dien Thinh commune this year is high".
Of the 2,200 hectares of spring peanuts in Dien Chau district, about 1,000 hectares are harvested and sold fresh tubers, equivalent to nearly 7,000 tons. Farmers sell fresh tubers in the fields to markets in many provinces in the country and export to China. With a high yield of 3.5 - 4 quintals/sao of fresh peanuts, the average income is 5 million VND/sao. Harvesting fresh peanuts often shortens the time by half a month, creating favorable conditions for farmers to sow 1,900 hectares of summer-autumn sesame early.
Mr. Le The Hieu - Head of Dien Chau Department of Agriculture and Rural Development said: “In the spring crop, Dien Chau farmers mainly grow peanut varieties such as: L23, L14 and local lotus peanut varieties. These are peanut varieties that bring efficiency, high productivity, suitable for local soil conditions, and good resistance to pests and diseases. Especially in recent years, we have restored the local lotus peanut variety because the peanut quality is very good, favored by domestic and foreign markets.
According to industry experts, favorable weather conditions, stable varieties, and intensive care are the reasons for a bumper peanut crop. It is expected that by mid-May, Dien Chau farmers will finish harvesting the spring peanut crop and complete the summer-autumn sesame planting.
