The meeting is believed by many diplomats and experts to be a breakthrough in resolving difficult issues in East Asia.

New milestone in US-Japan-Korea cooperation

That is the view of South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol about the meeting considered to be historic at Camp David this August. “The US-Japan-ROK Summit held at Camp David will mark a new milestone in trilateral cooperation contributing to peace and prosperity on the Korean Peninsula and in the Indo-Pacific region. The importance of trilateral security cooperation is increasing. To fundamentally prevent North Korea's nuclear and missile threats, the three sides of South Korea, the US and Japan need to cooperate closely on reconnaissance equipment as well as increase real-time data sharing on North Korea's missiles and nuclear weapons,” the South Korean President affirmed.

Previously, Mr. Kurt Campbell - Coordinator of the US National Security Council for Indo-Pacific issues said that Washington expects the thaw in relations between Asian neighbors to contribute to promoting cooperation between the three sides of South Korea, the US and Japan in the face of security challenges in the region, as well as in the world.

In a recent statement, the White House affirmed: "We reaffirm the strong friendship and inviolable alliance between the United States and Japan as well as between the United States and the Republic of Korea, and open a new chapter in trilateral cooperation."

Observers say that the first time the US, Japan and South Korea held a trilateral summit based on a common agenda among the three countries, instead of meeting on the sidelines of a multilateral forum, demonstrates the strengthening of solidarity among the three countries in the context of security uncertainties related to the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula, China's growing assertiveness and the prolonged Russia-Ukraine conflict.

According to international media, the three countries of the US, Japan and South Korea have held trilateral meetings 12 times in history. Of these, the three current heads of state of the three countries: President Yoon Suk-yeol, President Joe Biden and Prime Minister Fumio Kishida have met three times. However, those meetings all took place on the sidelines of multilateral diplomatic events. This will be the first time the trilateral meeting has become a standalone event.

In addition, the fact that the meeting was held at Camp David - which often serves as a venue for important diplomatic events at important moments in history - and the fact that the Summit was the first visit by foreign leaders to Camp David under the administration of President Joe Biden, shows the extremely high-profile stature of this trilateral event.

“Camp David will go down in the history of 21st century diplomacy as the place where a new chapter in trilateral cooperation was opened, ” said South Korean Deputy National Security Adviser Kim Tae-hyo. In addition, a recent source also revealed that, at the proposal of the US side, the leaders of the US, Japan and South Korea will likely agree to hold trilateral summits regularly, at least once a year.

Discussing the common vision and basic principles of tripartite cooperation

At the summit, the leaders of the United States, Japan and South Korea are expected to focus on discussing a common vision and basic principles in trilateral cooperation, as well as building comprehensive and multi-layered cooperation mechanisms in various fields and at all levels. In addition, the leaders of the three countries will also discuss measures to cooperate in promoting prosperity and future development of the region, including ways to cooperate on modern industries, and strengthen partnerships to respond to economic security issues such as risks related to supply chains and energy.

It is expected that one of the key “tasks” discussed at the Conference will be ways to “further institutionalize” the important framework mechanism for security cooperation among the three countries. This mechanism plays an essential role in maintaining security and stability in and outside the Asian region. The three sides will expand the scope of cooperation beyond the Korean Peninsula, together maintaining the international order in the Indo-Pacific.

According to plan, at the end of the summit, the leaders of the three countries of the US - Japan - Korea will issue a joint statement and a separate document outlining the basic principles for trilateral cooperation.

Before the summit at Camp David took place, on August 15, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, his Japanese counterpart Yoshimasa Hayashi and South Korean Foreign Minister Park Jin had an online meeting.
