In the rivers, ditches and sewers in Vinh Ninh village (Vinh Quynh commune, Thanh Tri, Hanoi), the water is black and smells bad, polluting the environment. Many areas here are flooded with garbage.
Signs prohibiting littering are posted in many places, but people still do not comply. Currently, this place is considered a "hot spot" for dengue fever.
Around Vinh Ninh village, the polluted canal system, stagnant ponds, and overgrown trees easily cause a risk of dengue fever outbreak.
Currently, Thanh Tri district is one of the districts in Hanoi with the highest number of people with dengue fever, Vinh Quynh commune accounts for 70% of the district's dengue fever patients.
As of August 22, this commune had 257 people infected with the disease, 6 times higher than the whole year of 2022. Notably, Vinh Ninh village alone accounts for more than 90% of the total number of dengue fever cases in the commune.
According to Mr. Khuat Van Son - Director of Thanh Tri District Medical Center, the fight against dengue fever requires the entire community to resolutely implement epidemic prevention measures in a synchronous manner, following instructions and procedures.
Therefore, the role of village leaders, residential groups, members of shock teams, and members of unions in taking action and propagating to the people is a decisive factor.
The ditches around the village are all polluted.
Deputy Director of the Hanoi Department of Health Vu Cao Cuong said that it is forecasted that the peak of dengue fever in 2023 in Hanoi may fall around September and October. During this period, the weather is rainy and the temperature is high, creating favorable conditions for the emergence of larvae and mosquitoes that transmit the disease.
"Hanoi has had many outbreaks with many cases leading to a high risk of outbreak and spread of dengue fever. In particular, during this period, students from neighboring provinces have begun to return to Hanoi to enroll in school, which is also the reason for the increase in the number of cases of people susceptible to dengue fever," Mr. Cuong shared.
Mr. T. - a resident of Vinh Ninh village said that out of his family of 4, 3 people had dengue fever. After more than 1 week of treatment at the hospital, Mr. T. and his family stayed home to rest and asked for a few more days off from work.
According to Mr. T. in Vinh Ninh village, there are still many outbreaks. Many families are still not aware of maintaining public hygiene. Wastewater flowing into rivers and ditches accumulates over time, causing pollution.
"During the days I was hospitalized for dengue fever, I had a constant fever and my body ached. It was more tiring than having COVID-19 or any other disease," Mr. T. shared.
Locals said that before this place was still good for bathing, but now seeing this scene makes everyone feel fed up.
Mr. T. also added that in the past, the river and ditches surrounding the village were very clean, and people could swim in the summer, but now there is only wastewater. This is a low-lying area of Thanh Tri district, and during the harvest season, water from the To Lich and Nhue rivers, along with dirt, flows in. The water has not been able to escape for a long time and is extremely polluted.
According to some local residents, the Vinh Ninh Village Agricultural Cooperative has been taking untreated, dirty, foul-smelling water from the Nhue and To Lich Rivers to use in the fields, twice a year. This may be the reason why the environment in Vinh Ninh Village is more polluted.
"Not only my house but every house is like that. There was a day when I used a lamp to catch a whole bag of mosquitoes. Seeing that scene was haunting. In the middle of Hanoi, the whole village was surrounded by wastewater. We hope that the authorities will have a plan to stop this situation from happening again," a resident shared.
Garbage is thrown haphazardly, making the ditches black and emitting a strong stench.
Recently, Hanoi has also requested the People's Committees of districts, towns and cities to launch a campaign to eradicate mosquito larvae, ensuring that all areas and households in epidemic and at-risk areas must be inspected and monitored; strengthen inspection and supervision of dengue fever prevention and control in the management area. Do not allow negligence or subjectivity in leadership and implementation.
Hanoi also requires districts in the area to resolutely handle organizations and individuals who do not comply with measures to prevent and control dengue fever, especially at construction sites, production and business establishments, enterprises, restaurants, etc. to resolutely prevent the epidemic from spreading strongly.
