The Trauma Hospital will meet the needs of treatment and care for people who are unfortunately injured due to many different causes, whether they have head, chest, abdominal or limb injuries, spine injuries, etc., all will be admitted for emergency care and treatment at this hospital.
On the afternoon of March 12, Associate Professor, Dr. Tang Chi Thuong, Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health, said that he had just had a meeting with the Management Board of Investment Projects for Construction of Civil and Industrial Works in Ho Chi Minh City, representing the leaders of the city's leading specialized and general hospitals such as: Orthopedic Trauma Hospital, Binh Dan, Nhan Dan 115. All discussed and agreed to propose the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee to allow the adjustment of the land lot with the symbol YT-5 (2.76ha) in the 21ha land area planned for healthcare, expected to be assigned to Binh Dan Hospital to build a second facility, now converted into a Trauma Hospital with a scale of 1,000 beds.
According to Associate Professor, Dr. Tang Chi Thuong, the Trauma Hospital model will meet the needs of treatment and care for people who are unfortunately injured due to many different causes, whether they have head, chest, abdominal or limb injuries, spine injuries, etc., all will be admitted for emergency treatment and treatment at this hospital. The hospital will be structured and invested in human resources, equipment, and techniques according to many different specialties (emergency, anesthesia, resuscitation, surgery according to many different specialties, etc.).
Regarding the scale of the hospital investing in 1,000 beds, with this scale in the future, it will help reduce the burden of emergency trauma for general and specialized hospitals in the central medical cluster. "This adjustment does not affect the infrastructure development of Binh Dan Hospital because the Department of Health has officially proposed the Department of Planning and Investment to supplement priority capital for Binh Dan Hospital to build new ones to replace old, degraded buildings in the existing location," Associate Professor, Dr. Tang Chi Thuong informed.
The head of the Ho Chi Minh City health sector also said that the city's specialized and general hospitals are willing to share the necessary specialized human resources for the Trauma Hospital to operate effectively if the city approves investment in this hospital. The key specialties that are indispensable when forming the Trauma Hospital include: emergency, resuscitation, anesthesia, orthopedic trauma surgery, neurosurgery, general surgery, thoracic surgery, urology...
“Regarding the current location of the Orthopedic Trauma Hospital, the health sector recommends that the city invest in rebuilding the entire hospital to become a true Orthopedic Hospital, focusing on developing specialized techniques on par with developed countries in orthopedics, and being a center for research and training of specialized orthopedic medical personnel for the entire region,” Associate Professor, Dr. Tang Chi Thuong informed.
The Trauma Hospital was built with a new facility in the YT-5 area of the Tan Kien specialized medical cluster, located next to the city's important traffic routes to the Western provinces. In the near future, there will be a new 115 Emergency Center, a new Blood Bank, and a Heliport built at the City Children's Hospital, which is very suitable for emergency activities and trauma intervention. When the patient's condition is stable, if further specialized treatment is needed, they will be transferred to specialized hospitals for further treatment.
It is expected that the establishment of the Trauma Hospital, in which the main capacity is orthopedic trauma, will solve the serious degradation of the existing Trauma Orthopedic Hospital which has been facing difficulties for a very long time because it has not been invested in rebuilding. At that time, the entire existing Trauma Orthopedic Hospital will be relocated to the new facility of the Trauma Hospital.
According to Associate Professor, Dr. Tang Chi Thuong, in the world, some countries have had the Trauma Hospital model. For example, in Korea, there is a plan to develop up to 17 Trauma Centers (equivalent to Trauma Hospitals) distributed in 5 regions of the country. The Trauma Centers are fully invested by the Government with appropriate equipment and personnel. In 2023, Korea had 15 Trauma Centers established. Currently, these Centers play an indispensable role in the health care service delivery system in Korea, meeting the needs of treatment and rapid transport of seriously injured patients for treatment intervention.
