Deputy Director of Lang Sen Wetland Reserve - Nguyen Cong Toai said: Identifying protection and fire prevention work as one of the key tasks, in recent times, the unit has done a good job of propagating to the people and employees of the unit to raise awareness and strictly comply with regulations on protection and fire prevention work.
KBT focuses on developing and implementing protection and fire prevention measures to minimize forest fires.
Arrange 24/7 forces, ensure adequate means and necessary equipment, and promptly respond when a fire occurs.
Fire prevention and fighting equipment is regularly operated to promptly respond when a fire occurs.
To effectively implement the work of fire prevention and control, Lang Sen Wetland Reserve proactively strengthens the Steering Committee for protection and fire prevention and control; at the same time, develops fire prevention and control plans and solutions; signs joint agreements with neighboring communes on fire prevention and control work; thoroughly educates cadres and employees to focus on implementing the fire prevention and control plan well, considering protection and fire prevention and control as the key work of the unit during the dry months.
In PCCCR, the unit organizes propaganda for officials, workers and people living around the area to be aware of PCCCR in the dry season; at the same time, propagates to people to understand the importance of forests in daily life to properly implement PCCCR regulations.
The unit regularly organizes meetings with local people to disseminate knowledge about PCCCR, ensuring that 100% of local people commit to implementing PCCCR work.
The unit proactively cleared flammable vegetation on canal banks and embankments surrounding the Melaleuca forest area; regulated water reasonably to maintain humidity; placed warning signs on dykes and built firebreaks; repaired fire posts and watchtowers; prepared all on-site firefighting equipment and tools; purchased equipment and spare fuel for firefighting.
In addition, the unit organizes and urges officials and employees to regularly patrol and inspect the area, and be on duty 24/7 during peak fire prevention periods; coordinates with the district's fire prevention agency to inspect the implementation of protection and fire prevention work, promptly prevents and handles organizations and individuals with behaviors that cause forest fire risks or negatively affect fire prevention and control work.
To promptly respond to fire incidents, Lang Sen Wetland Reserve is equipped with specialized equipment for fire prevention and fighting. Currently, the unit has 2 V52 pumps, 2 V46 pumps, 1 V20 pump, 4,300m of fire hose, 10 fire extinguishers, 1 canoe, 4 guard posts, and 4 fire watch towers. Equipment and vehicles are regularly inspected and repaired to serve fire prevention and fighting activities.
Lang Sen Wetland Reserve has a total forestry land area of 1,971 hectares, of which the concentrated forest area is nearly 1,054 hectares, mainly Melaleuca forests from 10 to 20 years old. Every year, dry leaves fall to form a thick layer of ground cover, which is very flammable.
Each subdivision has an area of 150-200ha, when a fire breaks out, it will be difficult to contain the fire and transport firefighting equipment. On the other hand, the forest land area is interspersed with vacant land, creating a leopard forest vegetation that is prone to fire in the dry season.
According to Mr. Nguyen Cong Toai, the weather is complicated and the heat is prolonged, so dry vegetation can easily catch fire.
When burning, the ashes fly up and the wind carries them away, continuing to burn the surrounding areas. The forest area is adjacent to residential areas and agricultural land of the people.
On the other hand, there are still households in difficult circumstances who, because of their livelihoods, are not aware of the importance of forests; their awareness of using fire for production and daily activities is limited, as well as going into the forest to catch bees, birds, and animals, which can easily cause forest fires.
“With the motto of prevention as the main thing, proactively detecting and extinguishing fires promptly, thoroughly, improving the ability to prevent and control forest fires, ensuring to minimize the damage caused by forest fires in the dry season, the unit continues to implement the motto of "4 on-site" (on-site command, on-site forces, on-site means and on-site logistics). Only then can we ensure timely response when fires occur, protecting the safety of State and People's assets" - Mr. Nguyen Cong Toai added./.
