Recently, a video recording the brilliant moment of the national flag seen from above, created by thousands of light bulbs in a dragon fruit garden in Vinh Yen (Vinh Phuc), was widely shared on social networks and attracted much attention.
This is the result of the creativity of members working at Thanh Long Valley Cooperative, stemming from the desire to develop local agriculture combined with eco-tourism.
Sharing with VietNamNet reporter, Mr. Nguyen Huu Cong - Director of the Cooperative said that the idea of creating the national flag from the dragon fruit garden was implemented in November 2024.
“Based on the fact that dragon fruit cultivation - the main crop of the cooperative - requires lighting at night to stimulate flowering, the young people working here and I came up with the idea of changing the lighting system a bit and creating the largest red flag with a yellow star in Vietnam.
The flag covers an area of 8,800 square meters. Tourists on flights taking off or landing at Noi Bai airport can see it when passing through this area," said Mr. Cong.
To carry out this special idea, he and his colleagues had to prepare basic materials, including 5,000m of various twisted electric cables, nearly 2,000 specialized light bulbs for dragon fruit cultivation..., and at the same time install electrical cabinets, circuit breakers to prevent electric leakage, anti-shock and connection devices.
"Nearly 10 people worked for a month to complete the project," he said.
According to this man, the dragon fruit garden was originally only for agricultural purposes, with no visitors (other than employees working at the cooperative), so it used a civil power source and lights were installed using flexible copper core wires.
This method does not ensure aesthetics and is prone to electrical leakage, so the safety level is not high.
However, when implementing the idea of creating the shape of the national flag here, they had to divide the electric wires into separate small branches. Every 30 bulbs had to be installed with a circuit breaker to prevent leakage and electric shock. The lamp sockets had to use specialized waterproof sockets.
“If it is just for normal lighting, people often use small electric wires so that after each lighting session, they can retract and put them away.
But when creating the shape of the national flag and placing it in place year-round, we have to use outdoor cables to ensure tension and durability, and to withstand harsh weather conditions. Only then will the dragon fruit garden ensure safety and aesthetic harmony, convenient for tourists to visit and experience," the director in Vinh Phuc added.
During the process of implementing the idea, Mr. Cong said that the most complicated step was designing the electrical system, wiring and distributing the light so that the system operated safely, according to the idea but effectively, without affecting the growth process of the dragon fruit tree.
After solving the safety problem, the members proceeded to balance the ratio of the flag and the star.
“This is also a difficult step, requiring a lot of time and effort from the team because the dragon fruit garden is very large, so it is not easy to shape and align.
We had to use a flycam, observe from above and send someone to climb the electric pole, adjusting it little by little for half a month," Mr. Cong shared.
Finally, they also have to "headache" to calculate the problem of lighting coordination appropriately.
To prevent the yellow star from mixing with the red flag, the team had to add a separate border of lights, every 50cm. The remaining colors were spaced every 2.5m.
Although the implementation process was not easy, Mr. Cong and his team feel very satisfied with the results achieved.
When the giant national flag was lit up in the middle of the large dragon fruit garden, many curious locals and tourists came to visit. Previously, the garden was only immersed in a quiet space at night, but now, visitors come and go bustlingly, even when it is dark, just to check-in with the "unique" flag in Vietnam.
Some plane passengers even took the opportunity to take pictures of the flag from above when passing through here.
“We light up the red flag with yellow star every night, throughout the entire operation of the Cooperative from now on. Not only does it aim to promote local agricultural products, contributing to making our province a sought-after destination for many domestic and foreign tourists, we also want to spread humanistic values as well as love for the homeland,” Mr. Cong expressed.
