Children participate in summer activities at Hoa Binh Primary School, District 1
On the morning of June 17, when we arrived at school, the students were participating in the modern dance club. After recess, they entered the "Mathematics with Life" class. Under the guidance of Ms. Ngoc Phuong, head of grade 3, and Ms. Nguyen Giang, head of grade 4, the students were divided into groups according to age (6 - 10 years old), participated in math-related games, answered math quizzes, etc.
Ms. Tong Thi Mai Huong, Vice Principal of Hoa Binh Primary School, said that during the 6-week summer course at the school, in addition to participating in the above clubs, students will participate in the school experience day; go on field trips to the Book Street, museums, visit some cultural and historical sites in the city; attend a buffet party at the school... In addition to organizing the 6-week summer course (with a fee), Hoa Binh Primary School also organizes review and tutoring for subjects that need to be re-tested for students who have not met the requirements, all free of charge for the students.
NO CULTURAL KNOWLEDGE TEACHING IN THE SUMMER
On June 19, Thien Ho Duong Primary School, District 10, opened its summer activities at the school. "We organized a 6-week summer course, from June 19 to July 31, and so far 170 students from 6 to 11 years old have participated. Students from many other primary schools in District 10 have also come here to participate. Some students will enter first grade this September, but their families also let their children join the summer club to get acquainted with the classroom environment. Or many 5th grade students have graduated but their families still send their children to the summer course because there is no one to look after them at home. When they come here, they are happy because they can practice many skills and meet friends," said Mr. Tran Anh Huy, Principal of the school.
"For many years, except for a few years with the Covid-19 pandemic, the school did not organize summer activities, but every year we did it because parents' demand was very high. Everyone wanted a safe and beneficial place to send their children so they could go to work with peace of mind," Mr. Huy added.
This summer, Thien Ho Duong Primary School has 14 clubs operating from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. All clubs are run by teachers who volunteer to work during the summer. "The teacher in charge of a club will send a plan for implementing educational activities of that club for the board of directors to comment and approve. During the club's activities, the board of directors will come to observe, evaluate and give comments," said Mr. Tran Anh Huy.
Mr. Huy also emphasized that summer activities do not aim to teach new knowledge as in textbooks, students do not have to bring any books or learning materials to school. The school provides enough equipment, learning materials, etc. during the time students participate in the club. The criteria of the clubs are fun, useful, creative, allowing students to experience, explore, and develop skills and qualities.
Ms. Tong Thi Mai Huong, Vice Principal of Hoa Binh Primary School, District 1, also emphasized that summer activities are organized in accordance with the instructions of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City, focusing on training necessary skills for students; developing a plan for activities of clubs with diverse forms, attracting students to participate; not organizing cultural knowledge teaching during the summer, cultural review during the summer is only for students with weak academic performance...
A summer activity for students at Thien Ho Duong Primary School, District 10
At the preschool level, Ms. Le Cam Linh, Principal of Son Ca 14 Kindergarten, Phu Nhuan District, said that summer activities do not teach new knowledge but mainly aim to help children have fun, practice sports, develop talents, participate in physical games, develop cognition and aesthetics, participate in competitions such as storytelling, poetry reading, acting, drawing, dancing and singing...
However, according to Ms. Linh, the preschool education method is learning through play. Therefore, through the games organized in the summer, children also learn many new skills. For example, through soccer, children learn discipline, order, patience, and tolerance. Chatting and interacting with friends also helps children develop language...
SAFETY FROM BOARDING MEALS
School principals all said that when organizing summer activities, student safety is the top priority.
Ms. Tong Thi Mai Huong said that although Hoa Binh Primary School currently only has nearly 40 students staying for lunch (the rest attend one session and are picked up by their families at noon), the school's catering department still cooks for the students like during the school year, ensuring a one-way kitchen, food safety and hygiene, hot meals, and control of food input.
Mr. Tran Anh Huy also said that all summer boarding meals for students are cooked in the school kitchen. "Food safety control for boarding meals is strictly implemented as during the school year. The kitchen located in the school is also convenient for the principal and the school health department to monitor the process from receiving food, preparing food, cooking, storing daily food samples, dividing meals...", Mr. Huy said.
Although the number of students is not large during summer school, food safety control for boarding meals is strictly implemented by schools as during the school year.
At Son Ca 14 Kindergarten, Ms. Le Cam Linh said: "It's not a summer activity that can be done carelessly. We believe that whether it's summer or during the school year, all activities in the school, from organizing educational activities to taking care of children, must be neat, methodical, and scientific, because they are all related to the safety and development of children." On June 19, when Thanh Nien reporters arrived at lunchtime, the children were being fed crab, shrimp, and pork noodle soup by teachers and nannies. Ms. Linh said that preschool children had just returned to school during the summer, so the meals were designed to be light and easy to eat, so that children could get used to the classroom environment.
Peace of mind to send children to work
Parent Hoang Dung said his child studies at a primary school in District 1. When he learned that Hoa Binh Primary School was organizing summer activities, he was very happy and immediately registered his child. "My child has a safe and fun environment to experience, my wife and I can rest assured when we go to work and pick him up in the afternoon. If we leave him at home, we will only worry about him watching TV all the time," said Mr. Dung.
Ms. Thu Hanh, mother of a 4-year-old child at Son Ca 14 Kindergarten, Phu Nhuan District, said, "I hope the school will organize childcare every year during the summer, so that parents like me have a reliable place to send their children, avoiding having to send them to spontaneous facilities."
In the 2024 summer activities plan issued by the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, the Department clearly requires educational institutions to focus mainly on training skills for students, building and developing diverse clubs to attract students.
The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training requires not to organize cultural classes for students during the summer, only cultural review for students with weak academic performance.
