NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg delivered a speech at an Industry Day event in Berlin on June 19. In his speech, Stoltenberg said NATO has provided unprecedented levels of support to Ukraine over the past year, but stressed that the alliance also needs to strengthen its own defense capabilities.

The official warned that NATO's arsenal was depleted and needed to be replenished as soon as possible, according to a statement on NATO's website.

"We also need a strong defence industry and some of you are here today. Our arsenals and ammunition are depleted and need to be replenished, not only in Germany but also in many other NATO countries," Mr Stoltenberg said.

NATO's secretary general said he had a productive meeting with defense industry representatives last week and discussed ways to boost production, protect supply chains and remove barriers to cooperation.

NATO's arsenal is 'exhausted'

Mr Stoltenberg welcomed Germany's announcement that it would increase defence spending to 2% of GDP by 2024, the minimum standard for NATO countries. He also expected other members of the alliance to make similar commitments at a NATO summit in July in the Lithuanian capital Vilnius.

Mr. Stoltenberg's remarks came in the context of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz warning that the conflict in Ukraine could be prolonged. "We are preparing for that possibility and are adjusting our policies based on that," Mr. Scholz said at a joint press conference with Mr. Stoltenberg in Berlin on June 19, according to Reuters.

Germany has provided Ukraine with air defense systems, tanks, artillery and ammunition since the start of the war. According to Mr. Stoltenberg, the country also contributes to NATO's collective defense by deploying troops to the eastern flank and sending aircraft and warships to participate in operations in allied countries.

Der Spiegel reported on the same day that the German army currently has only about 20,000 high-explosive artillery shells. The newspaper said the information was taken from a confidential report prepared by the Ministry of Defense to convince the budget committee to approve urgent weapons purchases.

According to Der Spiegel , the German army needs to increase the number of artillery shells to 230,000 by 2031 to meet NATO's target of having enough artillery shells to use in a tense war lasting 30 days.
