Quang Tri: The memorial site of former Minister of Defense Doan Khue in Trieu Lang commune, Trieu Phong district, covering an area of 7,500 square meters, was inaugurated on October 26.
The inauguration ceremony was organized by the Ministry of National Defense in coordination with Quang Tri province, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the General's birth (October 29, 1923).
Construction started in July and was completed after three months.
The memorial area was built on the land of the general's family, with a total cost of 9 billion VND from the Ministry of National Defense, local capital and contributions from relatives. The house was built in the traditional style of the Central region, with three rooms, two wings and a garden, inside displaying images, documents and memorabilia associated with the general's military career.
Mr. Tran Xuan Anh, Secretary of Trieu Phong district, said the memorial site meets the people's expectations and is a red address to educate the younger generation about the heroic revolutionary tradition.
General Doan Khue was a member of the Politburo, former Deputy Secretary of the Central Military Commission, and former Minister of National Defense. He had the alias Vo Tien Trinh and was born on October 29, 1923 in Gia Dang village, Trieu Tan commune, now Trieu Lang commune, Trieu Phong district.
During the resistance war against France and the US, he fought and commanded in the Inter-Zone 5 battlefield, famous for famous battles and campaigns in history such as Nui Thanh, Ba Gia, Van Tuong, Plei Me, Dong Duong. After the country was unified, he was appointed Deputy Minister of Defense and Commander of Command 719, Head of the leadership of the expert delegation performing international duties in Cambodia.
From 1987 to 1991, he served as Chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People's Army. During the period 1991-1997, he was a member of the Politburo and Minister of National Defense.
The General passed away on January 16, 1999 in Hanoi and was buried at Mai Dich cemetery.
