In the 2024-2025 school year, the provincial Department of Education and Training is proud to have 3 projects winning prizes at the national science and technology competition for high school students, including 1 second prize and 1 third prize for students from Vinh Phuc High School for the Gifted, 1 third prize for students from Vo Thi Sau High School (Binh Xuyen).
Teacher Nguyen Thai Binh, Principal of Vo Thi Sau High School, excitedly said: The project "Measures to improve the skills of using ChatGPT in learning for high school students" by the group of students Nguyen Manh Cuong and Tran Duy Khanh Mai, guided by teacher Nguyen Dang Long, won third prize at the national science and technology competition. This is an honor not only for the students but also for the entire school. This achievement will contribute to promoting the learning movement and passion for scientific research among students."
Happy and moved, Nguyen Manh Cuong and Tran Duy Khanh Mai shared: Our project was inspired by the observation of students who have not yet used ChatGPT proficiently and effectively in their studies. During the research process, we encountered difficulties because Vietnam has not had many in-depth studies on the skills of using ChatGPT in learning. However, with a passion for scientific research, the enthusiastic guidance of Mr. Long and the attention and support of the school, we have made efforts to research and study many documents; at the same time, consulted with experts connected by the Department of Education and Training.
We used questionnaires and interviewed students and teachers about the current status of ChatGPT usage among students, then synthesized and evaluated students' awareness, attitudes, and behaviors towards the application of ChatGPT. On that basis, we proposed 3 main solutions to improve the ability to apply ChatGPT in learning, including building a set of ChatGPT rules for high school students, promoting awareness among students about the benefits and risks of ChatGPT, and creating an environment for students to practice ChatGPT. After 2 months, the project was completed and won third prize at the national science and technology competition. This is a stepping stone and motivation for us to continue scientific research when entering university.
Previously, at the National Science and Technology Competition for High School Students in the 2023-2024 school year, Vinh Phuc High School for the Gifted had 2 projects that won second prize. One of the 2 projects was “NAVIsion: a navigation support device for the visually impaired using 3D cameras and artificial intelligence” by Nguyen Ngoc Duy and Nguyen Van Hieu.
Nguyen Ngoc Duy said: "With a passion for science and technology and a desire to help the visually impaired, we chose to research mobility assistive technology for the visually impaired. Our idea was facilitated by the school and enthusiastically guided by teacher Phung Dinh Kiem.
When carrying out the project, there were many difficulties because this field is quite new in Vietnam, so domestic research documents are rare, many components have to be ordered from abroad... However, with a determined spirit, we persevered in the research, many times going to Hanoi to test the product...
I also applied the knowledge and experience accumulated from participating and winning first prize in robot and artificial intelligence competitions. Thanks to that, our project won high prizes and was evaluated by experts as having great scientific content and profound humanity.
The Science and Technology Competition for high school students is a useful intellectual playground, encouraging the spirit of learning, research, and creativity of students, thereby finding new and unique scientific ideas, specific and practical initiatives and solutions that can be applied in life and are environmentally friendly. The competition also helps students develop necessary skills such as teamwork, starting a business, solving problems in life, etc.
The Department of Education and Training of Vinh Phuc always pays attention to promoting the movement of scientific and technological research among secondary and high school students. Over the past 10 years, there have been about 1,000 scientific research projects of thousands of high school students participating in the provincial science and technology competition organized by the Department of Education and Training. The Department of Education and Training selects outstanding projects to participate in the national science and technology competition for high school students.
To date, Vinh Phuc has had 1 project winning an international science and technology competition and nearly 50 projects winning national science and technology competitions. Vinh Phuc High School for the Gifted is a school with many projects winning high prizes at national science and technology competitions; in addition, the school's students also won the Cup at the Vietnam Robotics Challenge in 2022, First Prize at the Artificial Intelligence Competition in 2023...
Students from many non-specialized high schools and junior high schools also affirmed their talent and passion for scientific research. Typically, students from Yen Lac Junior High School had a project that won third prize at the national science and technology competition in the 2019-2020 school year; students from Vinh Yen Junior High School had a project that won second prize at the national science and technology competition in the 2020-2021 school year...
Many experts from universities commented that the scientific research movement among Vinh Phuc students is taking place vigorously; the projects all demonstrate the students' exploration and creativity; many projects have good ideas, are invested in, have reasonable research processes, beautiful products, and many products have high practical applications...
The outstanding achievements of the provincial education and training sector in national science and technology competitions for high school students are the result of the province's painstaking investment in education development and are a testament to the talent, creative thinking and scientific research ability of Vinh Phuc students. This is a solid foundation for them to keep up with the 4.0 scientific and technological revolution and contribute to the digital transformation.
