The deputy commander of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) confirmed on February 18 that Operation True Promise 3 would be carried out at an appropriate time. Earlier reports also said that Iran appeared to have begun preparations for an attack.
However, Iranian opposition press and Israeli media mocked Iran's statement, saying that the country has only threatened without any real effective activities in the past 6 months.
The announcement comes after two previous strikes in April and October last year, in response to Israeli actions.
In April 2024, Iran launched a major attack on Israel that included approximately 170 drones and more than 120 ballistic missiles. The targets were sites inside Israel, including air bases in the Negev and areas around Tel Aviv.
Israeli missile defense systems such as Arrow-3 and David's Sling successfully intercepted most of these threats. The US, UK and Jordan also participated in intercepting Iranian drones, while France deployed its navy to support the operation.
In October 2024, Iran again attacked Israel using some 400 ballistic missiles. The attack, called Operation True Promise 2, was in response to the assassination of Hamas and Hezbollah leaders.
Israeli air defense systems intercepted most of them, minimizing damage, but the Iranian missiles still hit various targets across Israel, including residential areas in Tel Aviv.
