During the years of resistance, Quang Nam - Da Nang was an extremely fierce battlefield. Implementing the central government's major policy, the localities of the two regions competed to establish friendship, together carrying out the major political task of carrying out the socialist revolution in the North and liberating the South from the domination of the US imperialists and their lackeys, reunifying the country, and achieving independence and democracy throughout the country.

In 1960, Hai Phong city, Thanh Hoa province organized a twinning ceremony with Quang Da province to support the Southern battlefield. Immediately after the twinning ceremony, Hai Phong city, Thanh Hoa province, as the rear base, focused on leading, directing, launching and spreading many campaigns, many patriotic emulation movements, encouraging and cheering people in the whole province to participate enthusiastically with the spirit of "for the South, for the Quang Da twinning", the movements "competitive work equal to 2 for the South"; "Not a pound of rice is missing, not a soldier is missing", "Young age, great ambition, heroic work"... to support the Southern frontline, especially supporting the Quang Nam - Da Nang battlefield.

During the most difficult and fierce period of the resistance war against the US to save the country, hundreds of thousands of young people from Hai Phong and Thanh Hoa crossed Truong Son, through fire and bullets to support the battlefield in the South. At the Quang Da battlefield, many young cadres and soldiers, students from Hai Phong and Thanh Hoa, who had just left school, followed the call of the Fatherland, fought side by side with their comrades and the heroic people of Quang Da, contributing to the historic Great Victory of Spring 1975.

Hai Phong City established Battalion 399, also known as Battalion 140 Hai - Da with 683 officers and soldiers who were children of Thuy Nguyen district to support the Quang Da battlefield. In 1973, Hai Phong City continued to establish the 2nd Battalion with the name Hai - Da Battalion with more than 500 officers and soldiers who were children of Hai Phong City, quickly trained and marched to the Quang Da battlefield to participate in the battle. Hundreds of officers and soldiers of Hai Phong City heroically sacrificed or left part of their bodies, blood and bones on the land of Quang Nam - Da Nang.

The army and people of Thanh Hoa also devoted all their efforts to the beloved Quang Nam - Da Nang. In particular, to contribute more strength to the front line, Thanh Hoa established the Lam Son Special Forces Battalion, known as the "Iron Fist" of Thanh Hoa on the land of Quang Nam - Da Nang; sent many civil, political and party cadres to reinforce Quang Nam - Da Nang and together with the army and people of Quang Nam - Da Nang established many glorious feats. At the end of the war, more than 1,000 outstanding sons of Thanh Hoa province remained forever on the land of Quang Nam - Da Nang.

Speaking at the meeting, Vice Chairwoman of the City People's Committee Nguyen Thi Anh Thi emphasized that more than 60 years have passed, but the affection and sacrifice of the people and soldiers of Hai Phong city and Thanh Hoa province have always been deeply remembered by the people of Da Nang city and Quang Nam province. The close-knit relationship between Da Nang city, Quang Nam province and Hai Phong city, Thanh Hoa province has always been especially respected and diligently cultivated by the Party Committee, government, army and people of Quang Nam - Da Nang.

On this occasion, Da Nang city donated 1 billion VND to support gratitude and social security activities to Hai Phong city and Thanh Hoa province. Previously, the city also supported Quang Nam province to build 100 gratitude houses, worth 6 billion VND in total.
