Coach Shin Tae-yong is facing great pressure from Indonesian public opinion when the archipelago nation failed to get past the group stage of the 2024 AFF Cup. Slogans calling for the Korean coach to be fired have been circulating on social media. However, Mr. Shin is unlikely to lose his job because of this failure.

Despite only using a youth team and not setting specific goals, the early exit from the regional tournament was still unacceptable to Indonesian football fans. Even the president of the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI), Erick Thohir, said that the home team should have reached the semi-finals.
Mr. Thohir also emphasized that PSSI will re-evaluate the work of coach Shin Tae-yong and his team after the AFF Cup 2024. This has led to rumors that the Korean coach's position is more shaky. However, head of the delegation Sumardji affirmed that there is no disagreement between the two sides.
"It is possible to criticize, but we should not put Mr. Erick Thohir in an adversarial position with coach Shin Tae-yong. Do not create conflicts because that is not good. Do not make the atmosphere in the federation worse. The Indonesian team still has a difficult journey in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers," a senior official of the Indonesian team told the media.
At the 2024 AFF Cup, the Indonesian team only won 1 victory with a squad consisting mainly of U22 players. Coach Shin Tae-yong repeatedly complained about the match schedule as well as the force issue - although all decisions were made by the Indonesian Football Federation.
PSSI President Erick Thohir spoke up to remind the Korean coach to focus on the task. In addition, he also refused coach Shin Tae-yong's request to influence the parent clubs to summon two pillars Ivar Jenner and Justin Hubner to attend the AFF Cup 2024.
