Since 2020, Vietnam has been considered one of the first countries to pilot and apply 5G.

On December 26, 2003, the Vietnam ICT Press Club organized a seminar on "Commercializing 5G to build digital infrastructure for Vietnam" to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Vietnam ICT Press Club.

The club, under the Vietnam Journalists Association, has 20 central and local press agencies including journalists specializing in the field of ICT. The club is a place where reporters can meet and exchange knowledge in the fields of journalism and information technology, enhance the dissemination of information technology knowledge, aiming to improve information efficiency and thereby contribute to the development of the Vietnamese information technology industry. To date, the Vietnam Information Technology Journalists Club has gathered nearly 50 members from 40 Vietnamese press agencies.

2024 is the year the Ministry of Information and Communications will commercialize 5G nationwide. This discussion will be a bridge between state management agencies, businesses and people. The goal of organizing the discussion is to listen to the voices of management agencies, telecommunications businesses and experts on the roadmap for commercializing 5G, building digital infrastructure for Vietnam to promote this process.

Since 2020, Vietnam has been considered one of the first countries to pilot and apply 5G. This can become a reality thanks to the Government's vision. 4G and 5G will be the mainstream of technology in the coming years. In which, the usage rate of 4G will decrease and 5G will gradually increase. The trend of countries in the region is to eliminate 2G and 3G to make way for 4G and 5G.

Up to now, Vietnam has tested 5G in 55 provinces and cities. Vietnam wants to promote companies to research and produce 5G connection terminals; at the same time, it will pilot 5G in high-tech zones, universities, research institutes, etc.

It is forecasted that by 2030, 5G will bring Vietnamese operators a revenue of 1.5 billion USD. By 2025, 5G is likely to contribute to Vietnam's GDP growth of 7.3 to 7.4%, as this technology can improve labor productivity and business performance. In addition, 5G also contributes to the social development and digital skills of Vietnamese people, thereby creating jobs related to science, technology, environment, and production.

Mr. Doan Quang Hoan, General Secretary of the Radio Electronics Association, said that 5G technology has been commercialized in many countries around the world and is an inevitable trend of mobile information. Vietnam cannot stand outside this trend. The time for Vietnam to commercialize 5G in 2024 is appropriate, not at the forefront but not too late. To commercialize 5G, the first thing the State needs to do is to grant official frequency band licenses to businesses to set up networks and provide services.

“One of the goals when researching and deploying 5G technology is the ability to provide high-density, low-latency Internet of Things (IoT) services. Therefore, it is expected to be used effectively in modern factories and large industrial parks. However, so far, it seems that this goal has not been as successful as expected. The reason is that research investment for 5G IoT has not been focused as much as 5G super-speed broadband. Therefore, the current popular application of 5G is still super-speed broadband access for areas with high user density. Perhaps at present, industrial parks and crowded factories can only welcome 5G in this aspect and apply 5G layered networks to establish high-speed private networks and wait for 5G IoT in the near future,” said Mr. Doan Quang Hoan.
