Chinese technology company Huawei will officially release its new operating system HarmonyOS Next at the end of September and will no longer support Android applications.
Huawei's HarmonyOS Next operating system will compete with Google's Android and Apple's iOS in the Chinese smartphone market. According to Chen Xinxin, head of HarmonyOS industry solutions, Huawei will officially release the new operating system at the end of September. The information was given at an international trade fair in Beijing on September 14.

HarmonyOS Next is considered a completely “pure” version of Harmony. Unlike previous versions, it no longer supports Android applications. According to Mr. Chen, this new operating system is “completely autonomous and independently developed”.
Huawei first announced HarmonyOS as an alternative to Android in the Chinese market in August 2019, three months after being added to the US trade blacklist, making it impossible for the company to buy US-origin technology without a license.
To date, HarmonyOS has run on more than 900 million devices with 2.54 million developers, Chen said. Huawei plans to invest more than 7 billion yuan (about 987 million USD) to encourage native applications and technical services for HarmonyOS, as well as build an ecosystem for the operating system.
Huawei also introduced HarmonyOS Next to developers in January 2024. Huawei Consumer Business Group President Richard Yu Chengdong revealed that the new operating system will officially be available on the Mate 70 – its next 5G smartphone – in the fourth quarter.
More and more Chinese developers are backing HarmonyOS Next. For example, e-commerce giant JD.com revealed earlier this week that a mobile app supporting HarmonyOS Next will be released this September.
HarmonyOS recently surpassed Apple iOS to become the second-largest mobile operating system in China with a 17% market share in the first three months of the year, doubling its presence from the same period last year, according to research firm Counterpoint.
