Today, August 24, at Con Co island district, the Center for Natural Resources and Environment Communication, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment in coordination with the People's Committee of Con Co island district, the Department of Natural Resources and Environment of Quang Tri, the World Wildlife Fund in Vietnam (WWF-Vietnam) organized a conference to disseminate models of plastic waste reduction, solid waste classification at source, promoting existing and typical models in Vietnam. Speaking at the opening of the conference, Deputy Director of the Center for Communication on Natural Resources and Environment, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment Cao Minh Tuan emphasized that, in response to the Prime Minister's call for joint action to solve the problem of plastic waste, in recent times, the Center for Communication on Natural Resources and Environment, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment has actively promoted information and propaganda, promoted the sense of responsibility, launched movements, built and expanded models, proposed initiatives and actively participated with specific actions to contribute to raising awareness of people and society about measures to reduce the use of plastic bags and pollution from plastic waste.
In particular, the Law on Environmental Protection 2020 takes effect from January 1, 2022 with many new breakthrough contents, related to many fields, many different laws, fundamentally changing compared to current regulations. In particular, the implementation of household solid waste classification is expected to be a breakthrough step to improve pollution and overload due to household waste as well as waste of resources from waste.
Mr. Cao Minh Tuan suggested that the authorities and people of Con Co island district, relevant departments, branches, units and organizations continue to coordinate to synchronously implement solutions to reduce plastic waste, and classify solid waste at source to contribute to building a clean marine environment and sustainable development.
According to Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Con Co Island District, Truong Khac Truong, Con Co Island District always determines that preserving a clean marine environment and building a green, clean, and beautiful island is an urgent task to contribute to building the island district into a tourist island, a cultural island, a safe island, and a "Pearl of the East Sea" in the near future.

In particular, the island district has launched a model to combat plastic waste with practical activities such as signing a model to combat plastic waste between the Department of Natural Resources and Environment, Con Co island district, and tourism agencies operating on the island; mobilizing the military and civilians to collect plastic waste and clean up the island; training against plastic waste for officers, soldiers and people; releasing fish fry to supplement marine resources...
In the coming time, Con Co island district hopes to continue to receive attention and support from ministries, branches, agencies, central and local units to gradually improve the effectiveness of solid waste management in general and plastic waste in particular in the island district, and at the same time build many new models to contribute significantly to the work of protecting the marine environment.
At the conference, delegates listened to experts and reporters from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, WWF-Vietnam and the Cu Lao Cham Marine Protected Area Management Board (Quang Nam province) present topics related to regulations on collection and classification of domestic solid waste at source; introduce the current status and impacts of plastic waste pollution; overview of the ocean plastic waste reduction project in Vietnam and project activities sponsored by WWF-Vietnam in Con Co island district in 2024; and introduce typical models of plastic waste reduction/classification of domestic solid waste at source in localities such as Thai Binh, Lam Dong, and Bac Lieu.

In particular, a model for collecting, classifying and treating domestic solid waste on Con Co Island has been proposed, including the following stages: classifying waste at households; utilizing food waste as compost, producing household biogas; recycling plastic waste and the process of burning inorganic waste and non-recyclable waste.

Within the framework of the conference, there was a signing ceremony of an agreement to continue implementing communication activities on Con Co island district and a handover ceremony of equipment of the Ocean Plastic Waste Reduction Project in Vietnam to Con Co island district.
