Statistics from the National Economics University show that in 2024, 70% of students admitted to the school will have an IELTS score of 5.5 or higher, while the current output standard according to the school's regulations is 5.5 for students studying a regular program in Vietnamese and 6.0 - 6.5 for advanced, high-quality programs, programs taught in English and the English Language Department.

Initially, the school organizes with 3 foreign languages ​​including Chinese, Korean, and Japanese. This is considered appropriate, increasing the competitiveness of students after graduation among thousands of other candidates with the same degree and all fluent in English.

Similarly, at the University of Economics and Finance (UEF), 50% of the curriculum is currently conducted in English, the remaining 50% in Vietnamese, and many programs have the entire training process conducted 100% in English. Therefore, English plays an important role in the curriculum, requiring students to achieve a high level of English proficiency.

With the ever-stronger rise of artificial intelligence, businesses require young people to be good at foreign languages ​​and soft skills in addition to professional knowledge. However, looking back at the current foreign language learning situation of Vietnamese students, there are still many students struggling to graduate from university, due to the debt of foreign language output standards, even though these standards are only average compared to the European benchmark score comparison table. At the Faculty of Writing and Journalism (Hanoi University of Culture), for many years, the faculty has recorded a number of students who are slow to graduate, mostly because they have not met foreign language output standards.

Therefore, in addition to solutions from schools to improve students' foreign language proficiency, the most decisive factor is still the efforts of each student. Only when students proactively build a specific and clear study plan and persistently implement it can they improve their foreign language proficiency. This is also a warning for high school students today to have a serious attitude and make efforts with foreign languages ​​in particular and other subjects in general, although the current high school graduation exam no longer requires foreign languages ​​as a compulsory subject but has become an elective subject. Regardless of the grade level, university admission is based on combinations that do not include foreign languages, during the learning process, this is still an indispensable subject, so right from high school, students need to cultivate foreign language skills in all 4 skills of listening - speaking - reading - writing so as not to fall behind in the future.
