Coach Shin Tae-yong asked the Indonesian Football Federation (PSSI) to intervene so that two stars Justin Hubner and Ivar Jenner could play in the 2024 AFF Cup. The duo were on the Indonesian national team's registration list but their home clubs did not allow them to play.
According to Bola, the Indonesian Football Federation did not influence or negotiate to convince the club to release the player. This decision was just announced by PSSI President, billionaire Erick Thohir.
"From the beginning, I did not force all players to participate in the AFF Cup 2024. Our priority is to develop domestic players as well," said the head of Indonesia's football federation.
The Indonesian Football Federation rejected the request of coach Shin Tae-yong.
The billionaire added: "Players also get tired and are at risk of injury. They still have their club careers. If they want to focus on their home team, we have to respect that. We cannot force them to return. That is impossible. Players are not paid by the national team."
Justin Hubner currently plays for Wolverhampton Wanderers, a team that plays in the Premier League. Ivar Jenner plays for Jong Utrecht (Netherlands). Both players, born in the Netherlands, are key players for the Indonesian national team in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
The AFF Cup (ASEAN Cup) takes place outside the official FIFA international competition schedule, so clubs have the right to keep players without giving them to the national team. A few days ago, after the draw with Laos, coach Shin Tae-yong called on the Indonesian Football Federation and the media to put pressure on them to be able to call up Justin Hubner and Ivar Jenner for the 2024 AFF Cup.
"We want to call Ivar Jenner and the Indonesian Football Federation is still trying. We want reporters to write articles so that Jenner can immediately be on the Indonesian team," coach Shin Tae-yong said after Indonesia's draw with Laos on the evening of December 12 at Manahan Stadium (Surakarta, Indonesia).
After 3 matches, the Indonesian team has only won 4 points (won Myanmar 1-0, tied Laos 3-3 and lost to Vietnam 0-1). The team from the archipelago country only has 1 match left with the Philippines.
