Harry Redknapp accused of 'making Nazi salute'. |
According to The Guardian , the incident occurred when Redknapp spoke to the audience at a charity event in London last week. When asked if the Football Association (FA) was right to appoint Tuchel, he replied with mockery: "I don't know. Honestly, I think he's a German spy. I'm telling the truth."
"Seriously, he was sent to mess with us. I'm telling you, he was like 'Lord Haw Haw' during the war, like 'We've got your best soldiers' and all that," Redknapp said, trying to amuse the crowd.
Redknapp then appeared to make a gesture that was reminiscent of Nazi Germany's style of play, referring to Tuchel: "'Go over there and destroy that team'."
He continued by putting on a fake German accent, saying “Ja” (Yes) and raising his left hand in a Nazi-like salute. Also in the video, Redknapp said: “I have to go, I need to see my accountant,” and joked that he had not been paid for the charity event.
The German ambassador to the UK, Miguel Berger, later expressed his displeasure with the move: “I think it is only a small group of British people who think like that, and I think it is a bit outdated. The England team has had foreign coaches before, so appointing a foreigner is nothing new. It is a bold decision, but it is very clear and smart.”
Redknapp's actions have sparked controversy, with many suggesting that as a long-time Premier League manager, Redknapp should have been more tactful. Former Portsmouth, Tottenham and West Ham managers have also been criticised for their lack of respect for Tuchel and the Germans.
Thomas Tuchel takes over as England manager after Gareth Southgate steps down after the Euro 2024 final. Tuchel is England's third foreign manager, following Sven Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello.
He was chosen based on his impressive track record, which includes Premier League and Champions League titles with Chelsea, and national titles with PSG and Bayern Munich.
