Not only acting as the first “shield” in saving people, first aid stations (FCOs) are also an important bridge between people and the upper-level health system. With a small, flexible scale and located in communes and towns, FCOs in Lam Thao district are promoting their effectiveness in protecting community health.

Established in March 2023, the district has 7 SCC points in 6 communes and towns: Cao Xa, Son Vi, Phung Nguyen, Tien Kien, Vinh Lai and Hung Son town, with 7 heads of points and 35 volunteers. The SCC points in communes and towns are operating actively, meeting the primary health care needs of the people. The members are retirees, home-based businesses,... aged 40-60 years old. The SCC points are supported by the Red Cross Association at all levels with some supplies for the work such as: Shirts, hats for volunteers, stretchers, bandages, medical alcohol... with a total value of more than 25 million VND.

The effectiveness of the SCC points in Lam Thao district comes not only from the dedication of the members but also from the smooth and professional coordination. There are always 2-4 members on duty at the points, with clearly assigned tasks for each member. When an incident occurs, one person is in charge of receiving information from the people, one person prepares the necessary medical equipment, and the others are ready to go directly to the scene to provide first aid. It is this responsiveness that has helped the first aid points in Lam Thao not only handle emergency situations effectively but also create strong trust in the community.

At the Hung Son town SCC checkpoint, many successful rescue cases have been recorded thanks to the quickness and dedication of the team here. Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Minh (62 years old) - Head of the Hung Son town traffic accident first aid point shared: “The town's SCC point is located right at my house, we are always ready, day or night. When receiving a notification of an accident or incident, we will be there as soon as possible, bring the necessary medical equipment and perform first aid on the spot. The important thing is to stay calm, help the victim stabilize and take them to the nearest medical facility. I have witnessed many tragic traffic accidents, some of which resulted in deaths and some of which caused injuries to traffic participants. Therefore, despite my old age, I still actively participate in first aid work, supporting those who are unfortunate to have traffic accidents in the area."

Another factor that greatly contributes to the success of first aid activities in Lam Thao is the cooperation with neighboring medical facilities. SCC points always maintain close contact with the district hospital and commune health stations, ensuring that after first aid, patients can be transferred to medical facilities as quickly as possible, minimizing the risk of complications. This coordination helps save time, especially in life-threatening cases.

Since its inception, the SCC points in the district have provided first aid to more than 20 cases, mainly cases of students colliding with vehicles. All of the above cases, after receiving information, were quickly present, provided first aid and promptly transferred to nearby medical facilities.

However, the operation of first aid stations in Lam Thao district still faces many difficulties such as: Volunteers at some checkpoints are mostly elderly people who are past working age and do not have knowledge of first aid for victims, which also affects first aid activities. In addition, supplies and equipment for the work are not enough; funding for activities is very limited; there is no headquarters for the SCC point, most of them are temporary shelters on the sidewalks of households...

Comrade Nguyen Thi Huong Diu - Chairman of the District Red Cross Society (RCS) said: "We hope that the Provincial RCS will organize community first aid training courses for volunteers and issue certificates. At the same time, we request the People's Committees at all levels to supplement funding for the RCS points to purchase additional medical equipment and support the volunteers' on-duty costs to encourage their spirit...".

Despite some difficulties, thanks to the dedication and effective coordination of the members, the SCC points of communes and towns in Lam Thao district are doing their job well in ensuring the health and lives of everyone. These points have become a solid trust for local people.
