Correct understanding of teaching 2 sessions/day in general schools

In the 2018 General Education Program, the teaching plan clearly states: For primary school, teaching is 2 sessions/day; Middle school and high school are designed to teach 1 session/day, aiming to organize teaching 2 sessions/day.

According to Thai Van Tai, Director of the General Education Department, Ministry of Education and Training, currently, the conditions for ensuring teaching and learning in educational institutions have been significantly improved. Through actual surveys, the percentage of middle and high schools that ensure the conditions of 1 classroom/class and teachers meeting the required standards is quite high. Nationwide, more than 60% of middle schools and more than 80% of high schools have the facilities to teach 2 sessions/day.

“In order to effectively exploit facilities and teaching staff and in accordance with the policies of the 2018 General Education Program as well as the Education Law, the Ministry of Education and Training aims to guide the organization of teaching 2 sessions/day for secondary and high schools with qualified schools”, said Director Thai Van Tai. He emphasized: The Ministry of Education and Training does not require secondary and high schools nationwide to organize teaching 2 sessions/day.

Organizing the second session of the day needs to be guided and managed to be in the right spirit of teaching and learning to develop students' abilities, avoiding the situation of turning into extra teaching and learning.

"Towards" is understood in the sense that wherever conditions permit, the facilities invested by the state must be effectively exploited to their full potential. Schools with adequate facilities must be open all day for students to attend, avoiding the situation where the school closes in the afternoon and students have to run around looking for a place to take extra classes.

In the near future, the Ministry of Education and Training will issue a document guiding the organization of the second session of the day so that schools are qualified to prepare for the next school year, in the right spirit of teaching to develop students' abilities, avoiding the situation of turning into heavy learning of knowledge or extra teaching and learning.

The Ministry will also guide schools on the content of organizing lessons in the second session according to learners' needs, aiming to supplement knowledge and skills so that students can meet the development trends of society such as: Teaching English as a second language; teaching digital competency content (AI, STEM, ...); career guidance content, ...

Mr. Thai Van Tai added that the extra-curricular classes on the second day are not required for students to attend. The organization is to create conditions for students to have the opportunity to study at school, not to make it compulsory. In case students do not have the need or do not register, they can leave school after completing the regular classes in the afternoon. The extra-curricular classes taught on the second day are not arranged by class or school year, but according to the needs of the learners.
