Associate Professor, Dr. Vu Hai Quan, Director of Ho Chi Minh City National University, shared many emotions at the graduation ceremony of the Faculty of Medicine this morning.

Deciding whether to teach or get paid in dollars

Associate Professor, Dr. Vu Hai Quan, Director of Ho Chi Minh City National University, gave an emotional and inspirational speech to the students at the graduation ceremony. Recalling his journey 27 years ago, Mr. Quan said: "My first decision 27 years ago was to choose between becoming a teacher or becoming an employee of an American corporation, receiving a salary in dollars. My parents were teachers and my supervisor also told me: you must get a PhD, must become a professor, must bring honor to your family and clan. I really did not understand what it would take to become a PhD or a professor, even though when I was in high school I also dreamed of becoming a mathematics professor. In the end, I chose to become a teacher, becoming a PhD at the age of 31 and an associate professor at the age of 37. It was my family and teachers who gave me the confidence and strength to make my decision"...

"I tell you my story also to let you contemplate: where is family in your heart, where is it in your daily actions, in every moment you spend with your loved ones? And personally, I am borrowing my family's time - a debt that I don't know when I will be able to repay," Mr. Quan said.

From there, Mr. Quan said: "I mentioned my work, my family, my teachers in the past 27 years to share with you something that I think is very important." He continued: "I see my 27-year journey on the time car moving forward, with some smooth parts, some bumpy parts, some highways, some village roads. On this long journey, to go far, fuel is important, safety is important. But keeping the car balanced is also very important. I want to talk about keeping the balance of the 4 wheels of the time car. That is work, family, myself, community."

However, Mr. Quan raised the question: "The most difficult thing is that you only have 24 hours a day. How do you divide the time between the 4 wheels to ensure the car remains balanced?"

"I never thought I would become the Director of Ho Chi Minh City National University"

Looking back on his career journey, Associate Professor Dr. Vu Hai Quan said: "The truth is that I never thought that I would become the Director of Ho Chi Minh City National University. My dream was to become a mathematics professor at the University of General Sciences and I started my journey to realize that dream with the simplest tasks of a computer room doorman or a cleaning staff. But I did those tasks with the highest sense of responsibility and constantly made efforts and strived to study."

Turning to the alumni of the Faculty of Medicine, Mr. Quan said: "I know that there are friends here who dream of becoming leading experts in cardiology, endocrinology, pediatrics, geriatrics; pharmacists who prepare new drugs, new vaccines... Realize your dreams starting with the smallest, most specific tasks, with the smallest victories. Commit to victory. It can be as simple as waking up 1 hour earlier than usual to exercise and learn English."

The moment new doctors and pharmacists recite the oath before receiving their diplomas

Sharing about the medical profession, Associate Professor, Dr. Vu Hai Quan said that the words "heart" and "feeling" are the first two words that come to mind. "A look, a smile, a handshake, a word of encouragement, or even a diagnosis result announcement, sometimes has a greater effect than a dose of medicine," said Mr. Quan.

Not only that, Mr. Quan emphasized the word "learning", which means constantly learning to improve qualifications, especially in the context of the rapid development of science - technology, of artificial intelligence. In response to the question that many people ask whether pharmacists and doctors will be replaced by AI, Chat GPT in the future, Mr. Quan analyzed: "AI can analyze and diagnose diseases from images better than humans. AI also has the ability to support the research process, discover new drugs and many other achievements". Therefore, according to Mr. Quan, learning and applying new technology in treatment and diagnosis is a mandatory requirement.

"Maintaining the habit of self-study and lifelong learning is a big challenge because, as I said, you only have 24 hours in a day and have to divide it between family, work, yourself and the community. The only way you can do it is to change. Change your habits: wake up a little earlier instead of sleeping in; read a little more books instead of going on social networks and many other habits," the Director of Ho Chi Minh City National University emphasized at the graduation ceremony of the Faculty of Medicine.
