The Great Patriotic War against fascism (1941-1945) was the largest and most destructive war in human history. During this war, the Soviet Union lost 27 million people and its infrastructure was severely damaged.
The Great Patriotic War ended on May 9, 1945, when representatives of Nazi Germany signed an unconditional surrender agreement to the Soviet Union and its allies. Since then, the Soviet Union and Russia have marked May 9 as Victory Day and often hold large-scale military parades to celebrate.
