According to a representative of the Vietnam Internet Network Information Center (VNNIC), many domain names are being abused as a means of online fraud.
Specifically: from the beginning of 2024 to now, 12,838 domain names have been discovered to be used for illegal activities, of which 2,500 are ".vn" domain names (accounting for 19%), the rest are international domain names. These domain names are used for fraud and posting illegal content.
Of the approximately 7,400 domain names used in the scam, 22% were domestic domain names. Seeing the "vn" suffix, many victims subjectively believed and followed the scammers' enticements, leading to billions of dong in losses.
As for posting illegal information, 16% of the 5,400 domain names used for this purpose are ".vn" domain names. Accordingly, the subjects create websites in the form of electronic information pages, unlicensed social networks, unlicensed or unethical game advertisements, virtual currency transactions, loans...
According to the Ministry of Information and Communications, fraud using both domestic and international domain names is showing signs of increasing.
VNNIC recommends that people and businesses be wary of websites and emails with international domain names ending in .com, .net, .vip, .cc. When in doubt, you can look up website and domain information via the tracuutenmien.gov.vn system to detect sites with signs of fraud.
