TASS news agency on June 30 quoted a statement from the Russian Ministry of Defense saying that the country's air defense forces destroyed 36 Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in the Central Federal District of Russia, including 15 in the Kursk region near the border.

"Last night, the Kyiv authorities' attempt to use fixed-wing UAVs for terrorist attacks on facilities on the territory of the Russian Federation was foiled. The air defense systems on duty destroyed 15 UAVs in the Kursk region, 9 UAVs in the Lipetsk region, 4 UAVs in the Voronezh and Bryansk regions, as well as 2 UAVs in the Oryol and Belgorod regions," the statement said.

The Russian Defense Ministry has not yet given details about damage or casualties involved, while Ukraine has not commented.

According to The Kyiv Independent news site, Russian officials often give false information about preventing Ukrainian missile and UAV attacks.

Russia also said it had to deal with the threat from Western UAVs. The Russian military was directed to develop countermeasures against "provocations" by US strategic UAVs in the Black Sea.

In a statement on June 28, the Russian Defense Ministry said that the UAVs were used for reconnaissance and targeting for "precision weapons supplied by the West to the Ukrainian Armed Forces."

However, NATO UAVs operating in the Black Sea are not a secret and are publicly reported by flight tracking sites.

Developments in Zaporizhzhia, Kherson

The Kyiv Independent on June 30 quoted Ivan Fedorov, governor of the Ukrainian government in Zaporizhzhia province, accusing Russia of attacking the town of Vilniansk in this province, killing 7 people, including 3 children, in addition to at least 31 people injured.

The town had a population of nearly 15,000 before the conflict and is about 30km from the city of Zaporizhzhia. Several explosions occurred after air raid sirens sounded.

Pentagon still unclear about $62 million in weapons aid to Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia region police said Russia launched two missiles at Vilniansk, hitting a key infrastructure facility, a shop and residential homes.

Russia has not commented on the developments but has always denied any accusations that its forces target Ukrainian civilians.

In Kherson, Russian-appointed official Vladimir Saldo said the region was engulfed in fighting on islands as Ukrainian forces were pushed back from the left bank of the Dnieper River.

"The fighting has shifted to the islands and the Russian military has intensified its operations. The enemy has been pushed back from the left bank," TASS quoted Mr. Saldo as saying on June 30.

In another notable development, RIA news agency on June 30 quoted information from the Russian Defense Ministry saying that the country's forces had just gained control of two more villages, Spirne and Novooleksandrivka, in the Donetsk region.

Ukraine did not immediately comment on Russia's information.

Belarus-Ukraine border tensions

The Belarusian Air Force and its air defense forces have recorded a tense situation in the airspace amid increased flights of Ukrainian UAVs, according to Andrey Severinchik, commander of the Belarusian military's air defense missile forces.

"Recently, we have noted a sharp increase in flights of UAVs conducting reconnaissance in the border areas of the Republic of Belarus. The situation in the airspace is very tense. The airspace over our border areas is constantly violated," TASS quoted him as saying.

Putin suggests producing banned missiles

Another senior Belarusian military officer said tensions were rising on the Belarus-Ukraine border.

"We have received reports about the concentration of Ukrainian troops, weapons and military equipment along the border. In particular, infantry fighting vehicles, multiple rocket launchers and heavy artillery systems of American production have been deployed to the Zhytomir region," said officer Vadim Lukashevich of the Belarusian Special Forces Command.

Ukraine did not immediately comment on the developments.

Ukraine mine clearance

Experts from the Ukrainian Defense Ministry have cleared 30,000 square kilometers of mines in Ukraine in the past two years, an area equivalent to the size of Belgium or Moldova, The Kyiv Independent quoted Colonel Ruslan Berehulia of the Ukrainian Defense Ministry as saying.

Since 2022, about 174,000 square kilometers of land in Ukraine have been exposed to explosives, leaving 144,000 square kilometers of land potentially at risk.

In April 2022, Ukraine created the Mine Action Corps. By 2024, units of the Ministry of Defense and the Armed Forces of Ukraine will join this organization to work in areas not controlled by Russia.

These units are currently operating in the Mykolaiv, Kherson and Kharkiv regions. Several countries have been assisting Ukraine in mine clearance, as well as providing equipment and training.
