South Korea is working to promote gender equality even in its legislature. |
The announcement ceremony was held at the National Assembly of South Korea with the aim of promoting equal political participation between men and women.
The Women's Council of Korea - a group of female lawmakers - pointed out that the country's current ratio of male and female parliamentarians is very unequal, and called on the parliament to pass the Gender Equal Participation Support Act.
In his congratulatory speech, South Korean National Assembly Speaker Kim Jin-pyo said that gender equality in the legislature is emerging as a new theme in the history of world democracy.
According to National Power Party Representative Kim Ki-hyun, if women's representation is not properly guaranteed, the completion of democracy will be far away.
Stressing support for equality in the ratio of male and female lawmakers, main opposition Democratic Party (DP) Chairman Lee Jae-myung said this ensures equal participation of both genders, where women and men share power and responsibility.
Meanwhile, Justice Party representative Lee Jeong-mi called on each political party to seriously take the recommendation of the National Human Rights Commission to ensure equal participation of women when proposing candidates for public office and clearly state implementation plans in the party charter and party regulations.
