Hanoi The 2023 Kovalevskaia Prize honors two individuals, including Prof. Dr. Hoang Thi Thai Hoa, University of Agriculture and Forestry, Hue University and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dao Viet Ha, Director of the Institute of Oceanography.
On the afternoon of March 7, Deputy Prime Minister Le Minh Khai chaired a meeting with female leaders and managers of central agencies and presented the Kovalevskaia Prize on the occasion of International Women's Day, March 8. Each awardee received a cash prize in Vietnamese currency equivalent to 3,000 USD from the Kovalevskaia Prize Fund.

Prof. Dr. Hoang Thi Thai Hoa, 51 years old, Head of the Faculty of Agronomy, University of Agriculture and Forestry, Hue University, was honored for her outstanding contributions in the field of agriculture. For the past 28 years, Prof. Thai Hoa has pursued the main research direction of soil and sustainable plant nutrition. The female professor focuses on soil fertility research, developing processes for producing organic fertilizers, and using fertilizers for crops. The research opens up new directions in applying non-chemical measures to reduce the use of chemical fertilizers, solve the problem of agricultural product safety, and the impact of climate change on crop production.
Professor Hoa has published 148 articles and scientific works in prestigious domestic and international journals, of which 19 are in ISI/Scopus journals. She has presided over many projects and topics with high applicability. These include 6 consulting and technology transfer contracts, and owns 2 exclusive patents for useful solutions on the process of producing organic fertilizer from livestock waste after biogas fermentation and the process of producing biological foliar fertilizer from aquatic plants.
On the podium, she was moved: "The award is a motivation for me to strive, to constantly make efforts to bring meaningful contributions to society, colleagues and the community," she said and said that she will continue to learn, explore and create, actively participate in scientific research activities and mentor the younger generation.
Professor Hoa hopes that the Kovalevskaia Award will be maintained, nurtured and inspired female scientists to make efforts in research and contribution. She hopes that there will be specific policies so that women, especially those working in science, can develop comprehensively and promote their role.
The individual award was also given to Associate Professor, Dr. Dao Viet Ha, 55 years old, for her contributions in the field of marine environmental science. She received her Master's degree from Aarhus University, Denmark in 2001 and her PhD from Tokyo University, Japan in 2009. She is currently the Director of the Institute of Oceanography (Nha Trang, Khanh Hoa) and Chairwoman of the Intergovernmental Committee on Oceanography of Vietnam.
Associate Professor Ha is one of the veteran experts in the field of oceanography, known as the first Vietnamese to research the nature, origin and mechanism of accumulation of natural toxins in marine organisms. With more than 30 years of research, Associate Professor Ha has chaired many international projects on oceanography, and is the head of the international cooperation project on marine toxins in the Western Pacific region.
To date, she has published 104 scientific articles, of which 41 are in prestigious international journals, and have been granted a utility solution certificate. Her research focuses on screening and extracting bioactive compounds from marine organisms; the mechanism of accumulation and elimination of natural toxins in marine organisms.
The Kovalevskaia Prize is named after the outstanding 19th century Russian female mathematician Sophia Kovalevskaia (1850 - 1891). This is an annual award to honor female scientists with outstanding achievements in research and application of science and technology. Over the past 38 years, 22 groups and 53 outstanding female scientists have been honored.
