Google Play Enables In-App NFT Sales

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên16/07/2023

Google Play product manager Joseph Mills stressed that game developers must maintain transparency and adhere to the guidelines. The new policy will allow developers to reimagine traditional games with user-owned content and “retain” them through unique NFT rewards, Mills said.

According to CoinTelegraph , developers must clearly state information about this feature in the game description. Additionally, game developers cannot promote or solicit users to earn money through gaming or trading activities, nor can they sell in-game loot boxes or allow players to gamble.

The rule is intended to ensure that new users to NFTs are not tricked into buying these assets in the belief that they can yield huge profits, a common tactic in the NFT market.

In July 2018, the tech giant banned cryptocurrency mining apps on Google Play.

Google Play said it is testing the new policy with a select number of developers and plans to roll it out later this year. Google Play is working with leaders in the Web 3.0 gaming space to establish the new policies and working with app developers to address new challenges and opportunities.

According to CoinDesk , Reddit senior director of engineering Matt Williamson, one of the partners assisting Google in updating the policy, said this will create a level playing field to promote user trust and responsible use of blockchain technology.

In contrast to Google, Apple has maintained a cautious stance on the digital asset ecosystem. Users can only buy NFTs through its in-app purchase system, according to the company's regulations. In October 2022, Apple said that NFTs purchased outside the App Store must not bring any special benefits to players or the app will be banned. Additionally, NFTs sold through games on the app store must pay a 30% fee to Apple.
