VHO - On November 8, Ho Chi Minh City Museum organized a seminar to exchange historical witnesses "Southern Reformed Opera Troupe - A time of fire and flowers". The program was organized on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the Geneva Agreement and the Gathering Train, and at the same time, in response to Vietnam Cultural Heritage Day, November 23.

The seminar aims to provide insights into the important role of the Southern Reformed Theater in promoting the spirit of resistance, contributing to the cause of national construction and defense.

The seminar consists of 3 parts: The birth of the Southern Performing Arts Troupe and the Southern Reformed Opera Troupe; The contributions of the Southern Reformed Opera Troupe in the resistance war against America; Preserving and promoting the art of Reformed Opera in the present period.

The program has the participation of Meritorious Artist Ca Le Hong - Former Principal of Ho Chi Minh City University of Theatre and Cinema; Meritorious Artist Le Thien - Former Deputy Director of Tran Huu Trang Opera House; Director Thanh Hap - Former Head of Ho Chi Minh City Drama Troupe; Dr. Nguyen Thi Hau - General Secretary of Ho Chi Minh City Historical Science Association, Deputy General Secretary of Vietnam Historical Science Association.

Besides, there were also People's Artist Thanh Vy, Meritorious Artist Phi Dieu, Meritorious Artist Van Hai, artists, researchers, lecturers, youth union members and students.

After the Geneva Agreement in 1954, the Assembly trains carried more than 200,000 compatriots, cadres, soldiers, and teenagers from the South to the North, including more than 100 artists who left the South to assemble in the North.

In 1956, the Southern Opera Troupe was established on the basis of separation from the Southern Performing Arts Troupe. This is where many talented and enthusiastic composers, directors, painters, and actors gathered, creating famous works such as: Phung Nghi Dinh, Kieu Nguyet Nga, Det Gam, Khuat Nguyen, Nang Tien Mau Don, Thach Sanh, Vo Thi Sau, Mau Tham Dong Noc Nan ...

With its influence, the Troupe became a shining star bringing songs and voices imbued with the Southern style to serve the people in the North... After 1975, a number of artists in the Troupe went to the South and became the core to build the Tran Huu Trang Opera Theater in Ho Chi Minh City.

The seminar reviewed the heroic period of the country's art, when Southern reformed opera melodies became a spiritual flame, motivating and encouraging our army and people in the long resistance war against the US to save the country.

Through the sharing of artists and experts, the young generation better understands the important role of the Southern Opera Troupe in preserving and promoting the quintessence of national culture, while honoring the great contributions of artists who have devoted their whole lives to the revolutionary cause.

Director Thanh Hap gathered in the North in December 1954 and was instrumental in building the Southern Traditional Opera House at Tran Huu Trang Opera House.

Some documents about Cai Luong theater are kept by Meritorious Artist Nguyen Ngoc Bach and are currently donated to the Ho Chi Minh City Museum.

He was a key member of the Southern Reformed Theater Troupe - an artistic cradle formed from actors from the art troupes and resistance groups against the French in the South: the Eastern Inter-Zone Art Troupe and the Ngu Yen Art Troupe.

At the program, director Thanh Hap shared about the background of the formation of the Southern Art Troupe and later the Southern Opera Troupe.

Similarly, Meritorious Artist Ca Le Hong gathered in the North in 1954 when she was only 15 years old. She participated in many performances of the Southern Art Troupe. At the meeting, Meritorious Artist Ca Le Hong also shared her memories from the early days of joining the Southern Art Troupe.

Meritorious Artist Le Thien started singing with the Southern Army Art Troupe for soldiers when she was just over 11 years old. In 1979, she performed on the Cambodian battlefield, both to encourage soldiers and to act as "cultural diplomacy"...

Coming to the program, Meritorious Artist Le Thien shared many touching memories, talking about the opportunity that brought her to join the Southern Performing Arts Troupe when she was a little girl... Along with that, she shared the difficulties, challenges as well as the mission of the actors of the Southern Opera Troupe at that time.

Meritorious Artist Ca Le Hong also shared about the training, guidance, rehearsal and production of the first plays of the Southern Opera Troupe from the early days in the North.

In arduous wars, the fighting spirit of soldiers, no matter which front they are on, needs encouragement. And one of the great encouragements for the actors in the Southern Opera Troupe is the attention and love of the audience, the people, and especially from President Ho Chi Minh.

At the seminar, veteran artists shared extremely touching but meaningful memories of artists and actors of the Southern Opera Troupe with beloved Uncle Ho.

Dr. Nguyen Thi Hau is an expert in the field of archaeology, especially Southern archaeology, and has made many contributions to the heritage sector of Ho Chi Minh City. She is the daughter of Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Bach - Head of the Southern Performing Arts Troupe, later Head of the Southern Opera Troupe, former Deputy Director of the Department of Culture and Information of Ho Chi Minh City.

Dr. Hau spent her childhood with the Southern Opera Troupe. At the meeting, she shared memories of her father as well as the uncles and aunts in the Southern Opera Troupe...

From the sharing of the guests, it helped the audience, especially the young people, understand more about the meaning and role of the Southern Cai Luong Troupe in particular and Cai Luong art in general in the spiritual and cultural life of the army and people during the fierce period of the resistance war.

Not only during the resistance war against America, but also after liberation, the Southern Art Troupe returned to the South and continued to contribute to cultural activities there, contributing to building spiritual life and motivating people to participate in building and defending the Fatherland.

The artists also shared about the motivations for actors to stick with the profession, continuing to contribute meaningful performances for the people. The guests presented the current status of Cai Luong art as well as provided directions to contribute to preserving and promoting this art form.

In recent times, Ho Chi Minh City Museum has been honored to receive many documents and artifacts donated by researchers, collectors, and collaborators, including documents and artifacts about the Southern Performing Arts Troupe and the Southern Opera Troupe.

Ms. Doan Thi Trang - Deputy Director in charge of Ho Chi Minh City Museum said, implementing the direction of Ho Chi Minh City on preserving and promoting the value of Cai Luong Art, the City Museum has implemented the work of collecting artifacts, documents, and images related to the Southern Art Troupe and the Southern Cai Luong Troupe.

In early 2024, the Museum received 243 artifacts and documents donated by Dr. Nguyen Thi Hau. The group of artifacts includes the Resistance Medal, the Stage Performance Medal and the Cultural Badge of Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Bach; personal papers; handwritten copies, articles, and flyers about music and reformed theater; books and documents about reformed theater art.

Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Bach's photo archives on the activities of the Southern Reformed Theater and Southern Drama Troupe (formerly the Southern Performing Arts Troupe), photos of some Saigon artists, from 1957 - 1984.

Aiming to preserve and promote the value of the collection of artifacts and documents of Dr. Nguyen Thi Hau's family, Ho Chi Minh City Museum will initially digitize the image documents to supplement the display in the permanent gallery "Culture - Art".

In the near future, the Museum will continue to collect documents and images related to the scripts and typical plays of the Troupe such as Phung Nghi Dinh, Kieu Nguyet Nga, Det Gam ... Documents and images related to members of the Southern Performing Arts Troupe and the Southern Opera Troupe during their time operating in the North to aim for a special exhibition on Southern Opera Art.

Ms. Trang said that the Museum hopes to have exhibits of documents and artifacts directly related to the Southern Opera Troupe. This is also one of the activities that the Ho Chi Minh City Museum aims for in the work of educating traditions and orienting the younger generation in the field of culture and art.
