Physical Education in College: 'Just Seeing Flowers in the Rain'?

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên14/10/2023

"Learning for the sake of knowing" because there is not enough training time

Having studied soccer, Luu Nhat Nam (English major, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Ho Chi Minh City) only practiced two main skills: dribbling and kicking the ball into the goal. According to Nam, the curriculum was like "riding a horse to see flowers".

For male students who knew how to play soccer before, like Bui Le Hoang Nguyen (automobile engineering student, Ho Chi Minh City University of Transport), basic skills such as kicking, passing, juggling the ball... sometimes made him lose interest in studying physical education.

Physical education activities mainly help students exercise outside of specialized classes.

As for Ho Phuong Truc (marketing major, Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics) she has been studying table tennis at school for less than 2 months (1 session/week), so it is difficult to practice well.

In addition, according to Nguyen Pham Duy (4th year student, Law University - Hanoi National University), physical education lecturers often create conditions for students to complete the course, so they do not have strict requirements, so many students have the mentality of "studying to finish".

From the lecturer's perspective, Master Phung Anh Quan, Director of the Center for Physical Education and National Defense at Duy Tan University, said that the skills of the subjects are at a basic level for students to learn "for the sake of knowledge", but in reality it is difficult to specialize because there is not enough training time.

Furthermore, according to Mr. Quan, physical education activities mainly help students relax after specialized classes, so they do not focus on grades or expertise. However, every year, the center still selects talented students for further training.

On the contrary, the physical education course will require more from students majoring in this field like Mai Nhat Truong (1st year, Ho Chi Minh City University of Education). Currently, Truong participates in 3 subjects with high training intensity: athletics, basketball and gymnastics (team-formation).

"Half laughing, half crying" when registering for the course

In general, physical education courses include both compulsory and elective subjects. At Duy Tan University, first-year students will participate in compulsory subjects including physical education and athletics; second-year students choose soccer, volleyball, or badminton, etc. Meanwhile, Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics does not have compulsory subjects, but only 9 elective subjects.

However, registering for elective credits also has a "half-laughing, half-sad" story. Nguyen Duy Tan (a student majoring in public relations and communications at Van Lang University) once encountered a "congestion" on the course registration page. By the time he was able to access it, the basketball course Tan planned to choose had no "slots" (places) available because the class had a limited number of students. "I felt uncomfortable not being able to take the subject I was most looking forward to," Tan shared.

Sometimes, the subjects fill up quickly because of the "guaranteed pass" factor or because they do not require outdoor activities. For example, chess is one of those subjects at Tan's school, so many students choose to study it with the hope of "passing the subject". Or To Nguyen Minh Khoa (a software engineering student at Saigon University) noticed that female students often choose easy subjects like table tennis to suit their physical strength.

Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Quang Son, Director of the Physical Education Center of Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics, shared: "Students now are 'afraid' of the sun, so they tend to choose indoor subjects instead of outdoor activities."

On Facebook, reviews of elective subjects in physical education courses are always of interest to students. For example, YG (a former student of Hanoi National University) once shared: "There is no need to talk about the 'hotness' of martial arts because this subject runs out of 'slots' from the first seconds with a 'passing' probability of 99%".

"Students also often look at lecturer reviews before registering, causing some classes with "hot" lecturers to quickly run out of slots," Ho Phuong Truc (Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics) shared.

New subjects: Golf, tennis, dancing, mind sports

In addition to familiar physical education subjects, some schools introduce new subjects or intellectual sports into their curriculum.

From 2022, tennis, golf and dancing will be three elective physical education subjects at Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics. "Economics students need to have diplomatic skills to build relationships after graduation. Learning more skills in golf, tennis or dancing will help you in your future work," Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Quang Son, Director of the Physical Education Center of Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics, shared.

Meanwhile, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technical Education added an intellectual sport. Thanks to that, Phan Thanh Luan (4th year student, information technology) can choose chess to practice some necessary skills for his major.
