Less load but less literary

Yesterday (October 18), the Ministry of Education and Training announced the reference questions for the 2025 high school graduation exam according to the 2018 General Education Program. This is the second time the Ministry of Education and Training has announced the reference questions for this exam (the first time was in December 2023). This time, the Ministry has made adjustments after listening to public opinion about the unreasonable questions.

Reduce stress when doing homework

The sample test structure consists of 2 parts with 3 focuses: Reading comprehension (4 points, 5 questions); writing includes writing a literary argumentative paragraph (about 200 words, 2 points) and writing a social argumentative essay (about 600 words, 4 points). With this structure, the sample test has assessed the candidate's reading skills according to literary genre knowledge, writing skills and social thinking. Reading comprehension material is a text outside of the textbook that helps students focus on practicing test-taking skills.

From the length of nearly 2 pages with two readings of the new text of the first sample test, the second sample test is reduced to 1 A4 page with 1 poem text. This helps candidates avoid the pressure of time reading and analyzing the text. Integrating paragraph writing sentences with reading comprehension texts also helps candidates understand and write more accurately to the main points of the text, saving more reading time. On the other hand, with the above integration, the test can easily replace the reading comprehension text of this genre (in the sample test, it is a poem text) with a text of another genre (such as stories, memoirs, plays, essays, etc.) without changing its structure, still assessing reading comprehension skills and literary argumentation skills.

The requirement of the social argumentation question on a very current, close and young people's concern issue (artificial intelligence) also helps candidates easily express their opinions and views. In addition, the scoring answer is also quite simple and open, helping candidates easily get points. Like the paragraph writing question only needs to develop two ideas, the social argumentation question includes steps that students are very familiar with when studying in high school.

Worried about the lack of literary content in the exam

With the length limit (paragraph is about 200 words, essay is about 600 words), the reference questions will somewhat limit the breakthrough in the candidate's work.

The issue of regional knowledge (Hanoi in reading comprehension and paragraph writing), or the overly topical social issue (artificial intelligence) will also bring advantages and disadvantages to many candidates nationwide.

Compared to the high school graduation exam in previous years, this sample exam has reduced the requirement for literary argumentation skills, with only 2 points for the paragraph writing question. This makes teachers worry that if teaching in schools continues to follow the graduation exam for a long time, it will underestimate the skill of writing literary argumentation essays.
