What does a taekwondo coach use a bamboo stick for?

As Thanh Nien reported, the Vietnam Taekwondo Federation received a complaint from Mr. NTH, the parent of martial artist NTNM (13 years old), about his son being beaten by his coach while practicing at Seung Ri Taekwondo Club (Ho Nguyen Trung Street, Khue Trung Ward, Cam Le District, Da Nang City) with Mr. Nguyen Van Kin as head coach and director.

In the complaint, Mr. NTH wrote: “On the evening of January 9, when I picked up my nephew from the club's martial arts training location and brought him home, he said that head coach Nguyen Van Kin used a bamboo stick to hit his thighs and assistant coach Quy used the back of a training stick (a chicken thigh) to hit his buttocks and chest while he was lying on his side (practicing kicking movements). It was so painful that he sat up and Quy used his heel to kick him straight in the back, causing him to lie flat on his back.”

On the afternoon of January 13, Thanh Nien reporters went to Seung Ri Club, where the incident occurred, to speak directly with head coach Nguyen Van Kin. At that time, Mr. Kin had just left the police station after the second working session (the first was on the evening of January 9) to return to the club. At the club's martial arts training ground, Mr. Kin admitted to using bamboo sticks in the teaching process, but did not use them to hit the martial artists. Coach Nguyen Van Kin also demonstrated how to use bamboo sticks to correct movements and train reflex skills for a specific martial artist. "I use a small bamboo stick 50 cm long in teaching. However, that bamboo stick is for me to correct the movements of the martial artist. In addition, I use the bamboo stick to perform challenges, to increase the speed and strength of the martial artist," analyzed the head coach of Seung Ri Taekwondo Club.

In addition, NTH’s parents also stated in their complaint that they had repeatedly advised the coach that using a whip to teach was offensive, unethical, and physically abusive to children, but the coach did not accept it. Regarding this issue, head coach Nguyen Van Kin said that he was very receptive and sensitive to the opinions of parents, but had never received any feedback from the family of NTNM martial artist. “In the case of NTNM martial artist, I interacted with his family a lot. M. is currently on the center’s martial arts team. Therefore, I have planned to arrange extra time to teach him,” Mr. Kin said.

Meet parents before suspension

On the morning of January 13, before working with the police, Coach Nguyen Van Kin posted an invitation on social media stating that he wanted to meet with parents to explain what was happening to him and the Seung Ri Taekwondo Club.

According to Thanh Nien reporters, on the evening of January 13, more than 10 parents came to Seung Ri Taekwondo Club (Ho Nguyen Trung Street, Khue Trung Ward, Cam Le District, Da Nang City) to talk directly with Coach Nguyen Van Kin. Here, many parents expressed their sympathy and shared with Mr. Kin. One parent said: "I myself have studied martial arts since I was young, so I understand very well. It is quite normal to have collisions during martial arts practice, leading to bruises or pain."

Coach Nguyen Van Kin met with parents before the club temporarily suspended operations from January 14.

The conversation between coach Nguyen Van Kin and the parents only lasted about 20 minutes. Mr. Kin also announced that the Seung Ri Taekwondo Club would temporarily suspend operations from January 14, until there is an official conclusion from the authorities about the incident.

On the afternoon of January 13, the People's Committee of Khue Trung Ward, Cam Le District, Da Nang City announced that after the ward's authorities worked with the representative of the Seung Ri Taekwondo Club, they made a record to temporarily suspend the club's activities from January 14.

In addition, the People's Committee of Cam Le District (Da Nang City) also directed the People's Committee of Khue Trung Ward to urgently inspect and clarify the case of parents accusing a taekwondo coach of beating their children while practicing at the club and report to the District People's Committee.
