Melody of the heart

(GLO)- If we believe that everything has a reason, then the reason for the birth of the guitar must be the boundless favor that God especially bestowed upon mankind.

And when Spanish craftsman Antonio de Tores Jurado refined the instrument to perfection in sound and shape in the 19th century, the guitar became one of the classic instruments, to sublimate and nourish our souls every time the strings vibrate.

What makes the guitar so captivating? Aside from the subjective factor, I believe that each instrument has its own “voice” with its own characteristic sound. The guitar, in its early days, originated from the lyre and the cithara, the oldest stringed instruments. But unlike the two above, the classical guitar has a soundboard and sound hole, along with an ideal length (65 cm) that creates the best resonance, bringing out the deepest emotions.

The beauty of the guitar is probably in its warmth, resonance, and vibrato. If we look for an instrument that has similar sound characteristics, we can think of the zither. Both are similar in the resonance, vibration, and vibrato of string instruments. But the guitar still has its own soul, not repeated in any instrument. It is the warmth, sharpness in each note and the deep vibration that even when the string-bow stops, the ending point still echoes somewhere.

When the guitar just sounded, the heart seemed to be entangled. Perhaps the characteristic of the scale is the 8-note scale arranged from low to high, interwoven with chords, making the guitar sound become a flowing and rhythmic stream of sound like waves, the sound of the guitar just collected and then amplified, spreading out to create a deep, deep, warm fall. The fall of the sound at that time is no longer in the ears but gathers deep in the heart, becoming the beat of the emotional range, becoming a passionate echo for many souls.

Along with the piano, the guitar has become one of the classical instruments of mankind. I remember the melodies written for classical guitar music such as Romance de Amour, Marriage de Amour, Godfather... although I am not very knowledgeable about the music rules, its familiar rhythm really moves us and once heard, it will stir us even if our ears and hearts are very difficult. They seem to contain a "mysterious power, everyone feels it but not everyone can explain it". There, the "voice" of the heart through the sound of the guitar is both familiar and academic, and can only be fully received by "feeling" rather than "understanding".

Perhaps to achieve the “classical” quality, the guitar has undergone a process of constant innovation. The difficulty and pickiness of the classical guitar probably lies in the complexity, harmony of the chords, the flexibility in each movement of the fingers creating a series of consecutive harmonics, so the more difficult the note, the better the melody. The guitar can therefore overcome the limitations of the musical instrument to flexibly express all the complexities of the sound-soul. Whether low-high, shallow-deep, picking-dribbling, whether accompaniment-lead, playing in fingerstyle or flatpicking style, each guitar melody can sweetly run straight to the heart, creating its own unique appeal.

Every time I hum the lyrics of the poem “Lorca’s Guitar” (Thanh Thao), I often remember the chorus “li la li la” that falls in a deep silence, remembering the life and artistic innovation journey of the Spanish genius artist Federico Garcia Lorca, who brought the passionate and free melodious sound of the beautiful Andalucia country with the hot and liberal Flamenco rhythm, blurring the boundaries of folk and chamber styles to make the guitar more intimate, full of life but no less luxurious.

If the classical guitar music genre is characterized by its abstract and scholarly qualities, then the modern light guitar genre has a narrative and intimate style, conveying the true emotions of life and soul. It seems that the stories and feelings that need to be expressed have found a place to be deposited and "belong". I really like listening to Trinh's guitar music. When the rustic solo sound resonates with sadness in the quiet space of the late night, of the deserted street and the small room, the deep lyrical emotions are found and aroused. That is probably the ideal "performance" space for artists with many feelings, the space for complete listening for listeners who need to listen carefully to feel.

There, the familiar melodies of the guitar resonate, whispering “stories”; even the sound of fingers strumming on the keys evokes moments of sublimation, hidden feelings, where there is only “me and passion” and the guitar is the confidant. The harmonious melodies vibrate thanks to the sound of the guitar, not with words but with feelings, no longer private feelings but becoming “common feelings” representing all human emotions.
