World steel prices

At the end of the trading session on March 31, the price of rebar futures for May delivery on the Shanghai Futures Exchange (SHFE) reversed and decreased slightly by 0.6% (19 yuan) to 3,173 yuan/ton.

Meanwhile, the May iron ore price on the Dalian Commodity Exchange (DCE) fell 0.9% (7 yuan) to 777.5 yuan/ton.

Beijing says it intends to curb domestic steel production due to overcapacity.

Although there has been no official announcement yet, some steelmakers have voluntarily cut production in preparation for the official announcement, thus limiting demand for iron ore.

Furthermore, concerns about the demand outlook, heightened by the escalation of the global trade war sparked by new US tariffs, are also weighing on prices.

Other steelmaking components on the DCE were flat, with coking coal and coke DCJcv1 losing 3.42% and 2.19% respectively.

Most steel benchmarks on the Shanghai Futures Exchange fell. Rebar fell 1.03%, hot-rolled coil fell 0.79%, wire rod (SWRcv1) fell 0.79% and stainless steel fell 0.85%.

Iron ore prices on the Singapore Exchange fell slightly by 0.04 USD to 100.95 USD/ton. Iron ore prices were pressured by concerns about the outlook for Chinese demand, after steelmakers cut production, reducing demand for ore.

In the coil market, cold-rolled coil prices in the US remained flat from March 7 to March 28. According to Kallanish, producers were offering them at $1,162 per ton EXW (ex-works). Earlier in March, the price of this product increased by $257 per ton after Washington announced a 25% tariff on all imported steel products.

Domestic producers say continued increases in cold-rolled coil prices could make imports attractive again.
