Pig prices continue to increase sharply, currently at 72,000 VND per kilogram - the highest level since 2023.
In the North, prices ranged from VND68,000-71,000 per kilogram, with Hanoi and Bac Giang reaching the highest levels.
The Central and Central Highlands regions recorded the highest increase in Binh Thuan and Lam Dong, up to VND71,000 per kilogram. Meanwhile, Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Quang Binh, Quang Tri and Thua Thien Hue provinces recorded VND69,000-70,000 per kilogram.
The South is the region with the highest pork price in the country. Dong Nai recorded 72,000 VND per kg, an increase of 4,000 VND compared to last week. Tay Ninh, Ba Ria - Vung Tau, Long An, Binh Duong, Can Tho and Ho Chi Minh City are around 70,000-71,000 VND.
Pork prices at traditional markets have also increased. Pork belly is currently at 170,000-185,000 VND per kg, up 5,000 VND, and baby back ribs are 190,000-200,000 VND.
A report from Hoc Mon wholesale market (HCMC) showed that the number of pigs arriving at the market on the morning of February 10 reached 3,565, equivalent to 266 tons, an increase of nearly 1,000 pigs compared to the previous week but still 1,400 pigs lower than the peak before the Lunar New Year. This contributed to the increase in the price of live pigs. Previously, the price difference between types 1 and 2 was usually 4,000-6,000 VND per kg, but now the gap has narrowed to about 1,000 VND.
According to Mr. Nguyen Kim Doan, Vice President of Dong Nai Livestock Association, the price of live pigs is still on an upward trend due to recovering demand, but the supply is in short supply. Farmer herd restoration is low due to concerns about disease and high piglet prices. Even large livestock enterprises are facing difficulties due to African swine fever and other diseases, causing output to decrease.
"Pork prices will continue to increase as schools and processing zones resume operations, but it will be difficult to surpass the 2020 peak," Mr. Doan predicted.
According to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), pork consumption in Vietnam is forecast to reach 4 million tons in 2025, up 3.3% year-on-year. However, domestic supply may face challenges due to disease and high costs of herd restoration. Live pig prices are forecast to remain at VND65,000-75,000 per kilogram until the end of the first half of 2025.
The Department of Livestock Production reported that the import turnover of livestock products in January this year reached 383 million USD, up 32.5% over the same period last year. Of which, the import of milk and dairy products reached 120 million USD, up 47%, while meat and meat by-products increased 34.9%, to 186 million USD.
In the international market, global pork production in 2025 is expected to decrease due to weak demand and limited supply of slaughter pigs. These fluctuations may affect pork prices and supply in Vietnam in the coming time.
