Fresh food prices edge up slightly

According to the Center for Industry and Trade Information (Ministry of Industry and Trade), at the end of the last trading session of 2024, on December 31, the price of live pigs in all three regions: the North, the Central and Central Highlands, and the South all increased. The highest price in the North was recorded at 69,000 VND/kg and the lowest was 68,000 VND/kg.

Similarly, in the Central and Central Highlands regions, the highest price of live pigs is also 69,000 VND/kg, while the remaining provinces mainly trade at 65,000-67,000 VND/kg. In the South, the price of pigs is currently being bought and sold at 64,000-69,000 VND/kg.

Thus, compared to nearly 2 months ago, the price of live pigs nationwide has increased by about 10,000 VND/kg.

The increase in the price of live pigs has led to a corresponding increase in the price of fresh pork in the market. Since the end of November 2024, meat prices in the markets have started to increase and up to now, delicious meats such as: lean shoulder, rump, belly, loin ribs fluctuate at 140,000 - 150,000 VND/kg; Other meats are about 10,000 VND/kg lower.

In addition to pork, market surveys also show that chicken and beef prices are gradually increasing. Feathered chicken is 140,000 VND/kg, an increase of 10,000 VND/kg. Meanwhile, beef prices are also from 260,000-290,000 VND/kg, an increase of about 10,000 VND/kg compared to before.

At this time, some types of fish also increased in price. Grass carp cut into pieces is 90,000 VND/kg; snakehead fish is 150,000 VND/kg. Other types of seafood prices are relatively stable.

In contrast to the increase in fresh food prices at traditional markets, the prices of the above items at supermarkets remain stable. In addition, supermarkets also have end-of-day promotions for some types of food or incentives for loyal customers.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Dong, a trader at My Dinh market, said: "Every year, meat prices increase near Tet, but this year they have increased early. The high price of pork is partly due to the flood in September 2024, the herd restoration cannot keep up with market demand, along with the complicated impact of African swine fever, which has affected the psychology of farmers."

According to Mr. Nguyen Kim Doan - Vice President of Dong Nai Livestock Association, the sharp increase in pork prices in the market in the past few days shows that supply is still lacking.

“This is the time when processing enterprises are stepping up purchases to bring products to the market in the next 2-3 weeks, so raw materials are in short supply. In the coming days, the price of live pigs will fluctuate further,” said a representative of the Dong Nai Livestock Association.

However, he predicted that the price of live pigs may only fluctuate around 70,000 VND/kg in the short term, and in the long term it will be difficult to increase higher because large enterprises will have adjustments to control and avoid increasing too much, affecting the consumer price index.

Market records show that purchasing power for pork is quite slow, while demand for beef and chicken is stable.

According to the Hanoi Department of Industry and Trade, this year, Hanoi has prepared 59,670 tons of live pigs, 19,890 tons of poultry meat, 16,500 tons of beef, 396 million poultry eggs, 331,500 tons of vegetables, 16,560 tons of seafood, 16,560 tons of processed foods... People can shop with peace of mind, without worrying about shortages.
