“Next November, I will receive the 80-year Party membership badge. So it has been 80 years…”, Ms. Nguyen Thi Hanh, 94 years old (residing in Tang Nhon Phu A ward, Thu Duc city, Ho Chi Minh City) proudly shared. Not long ago, Ho Chi Minh City awarded the Party badge on May 19, 2024, her husband, Associate Professor of Philosophy Ngo Hien (Hai Sam) was also honored to receive the 80-year Party membership badge. This is a rare case in Ho Chi Minh City when both husband and wife received the 80-year Party membership badge.
Firmly adhere to the Party's ideals
At the beginning of the conversation, Mrs. Hanh asked us if we were Party members. When we confirmed that we were Party members, she advised us, “You must be absolutely loyal to the Party’s revolutionary ideals, my child!” The reminder from our grandmother, an elderly Party comrade, moved us. Perhaps, because of their absolute loyalty to the Party’s revolutionary ideals, they overcame countless hardships in the two resistance wars against the French and the Americans, to continue to contribute to and build the country.
Mrs. Nguyen Thi Hanh was born into a family with a revolutionary tradition in Thua Thien Hue province. She worked as a liaison when she was 11 or 12 years old and then participated in the local August Revolution and the general uprising in 1945. At the age of 16, she was honored to join the Party. Her husband, Mr. Ngo Hien, a pre-revolutionary cadre, joined the Party in the same year as her - 1946 - when he was 18 years old.
Mrs. Hanh said that young people like her husband and wife at that time, especially young party members, carried within them great ideals of the Party and the revolution. After joining the Party, she continued to join the Central Viet Minh Volunteer Propaganda Team. He was the Deputy Secretary of the National Salvation Youth in Tuy Hoa, an officer of the Phu Yen Information and Propaganda Department, the Thua Thien Information and Propaganda Department, and then worked secretly in the inner city of Hue.
During their revolutionary activities, both he and she were captured and brutally tortured by the enemy twice. However, the steadfastness of a party member and their revolutionary ideals did not shake the will of Mr. Ngo Hien and Mrs. Nguyen Thi Hanh in the face of the enemy's plots. "If it weren't for the Party to guide us, if we weren't party members, we probably wouldn't have been able to overcome those beatings and later it would have been difficult to overcome obstacles together to preserve and build our family like today," Mrs. Hanh was moved when recalling those difficult days.
Regardless of fame and fortune
For his contributions, Mr. Ngo Hien was awarded the Third Class Medal of Resistance against France; First Class Medal of Resistance against America; First Class Labor Medal. Mrs. Nguyen Thi Hanh was awarded the Third Class Medal of Resistance against France, First Class Medal of Resistance against America... The valuable thing about them is that they always lived honestly, not demanding personal benefits for what they had achieved.
Taking us to visit the ground-floor house located deep in an alley on Le Van Viet Street, Tang Nhon Phu A Ward, Mrs. Hanh said that this piece of land is the only property that the state has granted them, and the rest of the land was bought by the family and then built a house to live in. The house has been stained by time, all the objects have an old color but are clean, tidy and full of memories of the two of them. "The state is still in difficulty, we are cared for and given conditions to have a place to shelter from the sun and rain, that's good enough, why ask for more", Mrs. Hanh expressed. With that mindset, the couple just take care of the family within their ability, their children and grandchildren also study and work according to their abilities.
During the conversation, Mrs. Hanh mentioned the word “lucky” many times when talking about her and her husband’s lives. That they were luckier than many comrades who fell for the country’s independence and freedom; they were also lucky to witness the prosperity of the country, to witness the growth of the Party. Grateful to those who fell, grateful to those who helped during the years they participated in revolutionary activities, so after retirement, they actively participated in volunteer activities and were active in local activities.
Having lived almost their entire lives, looking back at the years of living, participating in revolutionary activities and participating in work, both of them proudly affirm that they have kept their oath to the Party, the oath of the eighteen-year-old boy and girl who boldly swore their oath before the Party flag and the national flag 80 years ago.
According to Secretary of the Party Committee of Tang Nhon Phu A Ward Nguyen Tuan Khanh, comrade Ngo Hien and comrade Nguyen Thi Hanh have participated in local activities for many years, from being Deputy Secretary of the Party Cell to Secretary of the Neighborhood Party Cell, to the work of the ward's mass organizations, especially as the first Head of the Association of Former Teachers of District 9 (now Thu Duc City). The two comrades also actively contributed many ideas to the Party Cell and Party Committee, contributing ideas to build a clean and strong Party organization; actively participated in propaganda work, political and ideological education, raising awareness and sense of responsibility of the community in building and defending the Fatherland; always being a shining example for the next generation to follow.
