Duy Manh: 'I once made inappropriate statements'

Việt NamViệt Nam09/10/2024

Musician Duy Manh said that in the past, he liked to joke, so he made inappropriate statements online, but he accepted and improved when he received feedback.

He attracted the attention of the audience when he reunited with singer Tuan Hung after 14 years, in the show. Brothers unite, raised 3.6 billion VND to support people affected by typhoon Yagi. On this occasion, Duy Manh talked about his work, life and plans with music.

- After event Combining with singer Tuan Hung, what do you think you get the most?

- Many people have advised me to do a live show, even committed to financial support. However, I think I am a musician, organizing a private concert is more suitable for a singer. As for the show Brothers unite is an opportunity for us to spread our love for our homeland. Hung joked that "the two brothers appeared as if at a final match", but I don't think so. It is not an event to perform or compare each other. We want to do something meaningful together to help people in Thai Nguyen, Lao Cai, Yen Bai, Lang Son, affected by natural disasters. These are places where I sang at fairs 20 years ago and was loved by everyone.

Hung and I are still the ones who benefit the most from this program. Many artists spend billions of dong making MVs and music shows to build their reputation. We only contribute but have a better image and reputation. The social impact that the show brings is hundreds of times greater than the products I have made. This is something that money cannot buy.

- There was a time when we were together and then angry with each other for many years. Currently, the relationship between you and Tuan Hung how

- We have known each other for many years but have met less than ten times. I neither love nor hate Hung. Once, I said: "You tease me but you never insult or touch my family. You just like to joke, so that your fans and I can talk back and forth for fun". Hung once replied: "Then keep teasing me".

A few years ago, Hung said: "Honey, we're grown up now, with a wife and children. Stop joking and you should also stop calling yourself a singer." After listening, I continued to tease him: "That's my stage name, honey. Some people strive to be artists their whole lives, but I just want to be a singer, performing when invited to make a living." In general, we still maintain a normal relationship.

- 30 years in the music industry, rolling from North to South, is there anything you regret?

- The thing I regret the most is getting a tattoo on my arm. When I was young, I wore earrings and tattoos because I thought it was art, but now I see that it is not. I thought tattoo artists were artists, creating beautiful works. But when I got a tattoo on my body, it was just a hobby.

In addition, I find it inconvenient because of my tattoos. When singing in prison, serving prisoners or in some children's events, I have to wear long-sleeved shirts. Most recently, in a live show Brothers unite, perform the song Side by side under the national flag, i also have to cover my arm. i thought about removing the tattoo but i was afraid of scarring. if i could do it again, i would only tattoo in a place where no one can see.

- Why, even though you are a famous person, do you often make controversial statements on social networks?

- Before the Cyber Security Law, I used Facebook carefreely, and when I was upset or angry, I expressed it immediately. My language was definitely not up to standard. I decided not to build a serious image, so I often commented cheerfully. However, I did not incite violence, and always expressed my love for my homeland and country. In addition, I only operated on my personal page, not going to other people's "houses". Maybe my joy was too much for many people.

In 2020, some people edited and edited my comments related to politics and national sovereignty. I provided the authorities with documents proving my innocence, so only be fined because of swearing. I accept and accept it. Now I use Facebook just to have fun with my fans.

- What was the most difficult time in your career? your?

- Before I was famous, my salary was about 100,000 VND per night. In 2004, after having an article Red and black life, Salary increased 1,000 times. Suddenly had a lot of money but poor management, I was confused, played around, wasted money. When I wanted to do business, I failed.

I was depressed when I went to the South alone. I am a composer, and I am associated with sad music, so there are times when I need solitude. However, when I am immersed in it, I get stressed. My wife had her own job in Hai Phong, but in 2010, she had to give it all up to move to Ho Chi Minh City with her husband.

- What role do you play as the breadwinner in the family?

- I still sing and earn money. I am not a tycoon, the rumor is a misunderstanding by the audience. I think I am frugal and know how to spend money at the right time and place. I know some artists who have a good income but are passionate about gambling. That is wasteful, a huge waste of time and money. For a songwriter, being involved in gambling is not creative, because it makes people lose focus. Whether you win or lose, you will think about it all day. Gambling plays on people's greed, making them blinded by money and losing their dreams and romance.

- Thu Cam's daughter sings, what do you worry about when she enters showbiz?

- At first, I was worried about the complicated showbiz environment. But when I met Gen Z artists, I felt reassured because they competed fairly and helped each other improve. I let my child experience and grow up on his own, and only advised him not to think about money when singing, but to improve himself first.

- How is your wife by your side?

- For me, writing songs is easy but keeping the family happy is extremely difficult. I am who I am today thanks to my wife. My wife is a simple and thoughtful person. She is serious while I am open-minded, so there are many disagreements. When we argue, she can be angry and harsh, but afterwards she still cares for and tolerates her husband and children. My wife takes care of the family, raises the children, and guides the two children to study music and pursue art. She also manages and builds the image for me and my daughter Thu Cam.

Before, I was a playboy. Now I am more mature, appreciate my health more, do not drink alcohol, and limit my drinking. I quit smoking when my wife gave birth to my son in 2012, but started smoking again a few years ago because I was bored during the pandemic. Recently, I promised my son that I would quit.

- Having a happy, stable family, where do you get the inspiration to compose music when you usually write sad music?

- Currently, I am no longer in the mood to write sad music. If anything, emotions only come in flashes when I read stories or watch movies. I think I am a rare artist in my 50s who goes against the trend. I do not "beg for the past" but aim for new music, practice dancing, and practice rapping in middle age.

I like to write songs that spread the spirit of national unity, such as the song I am 37 years old, Talking about Nghe An people. I really hate regional discrimination because it creates instability in society.
