Business Insider reported today (September 13) that a luxury yacht 104 meters long, 18 meters wide and carrying 206 passengers ran aground in a remote area of Greenland under Danish control.

"On the afternoon of 11 September West Greenland time, the Arctic Command received notification that the Ocean Explorer was stranded in the Alpejord in the Northeast Greenland National Park. The yacht was unable to free itself," the Danish Joint Arctic Command (JAC) announced on September 12.

The situation is "of course worrying" and despite the aid of the tide, the Ocean Explorer has not been able to be freed, said Brian Jensen, JAC's operations manager.

"The nearest source of help is also very far away. Our units are very far away and the weather can be very adverse. However, in this situation, we do not see any immediate danger to human life or the environment. This can be reassuring," Mr. Brian added, according to The Guardian .

As of September 12, the Knud Rasmusse, the closest ship to the Ocean Explorer, was 2,222 km away. Denmark said it was still monitoring the situation closely and taking the incident very seriously, and that the Knud Rasmusse could approach the stranded yacht as early as September 15.

In the meantime, JAC has requested a nearby cruise ship to remain in the area to assist in case the situation changes.

A representative for Aurora Expeditions, the operator of the Ocean Explorer, told Business Insider that everyone on board was safe and well.
