According to Japan Today on March 18, a wave of boycotts of American goods is taking place strongly in Denmark as well as in many European countries, in the context of controversial policies of US President Donald Trump .
In Denmark, outrage flared after Mr Trump threatened to annex the country's territory of Greenland , along with other controversial political moves such as taking control of the Panama Canal and Gaza.
Those who participate in the boycott of American goods believe that this is the only way to express their opposition to US foreign policy.
According to Google Trends, boycott phrases like "Boycott USA" and "Boycott America" spiked immediately after Mr Trump announced new tariffs on European goods, with top search regions including Denmark, Canada and France.
Ivan Hansen, 67, a former Danish police officer, decided to completely eliminate American products from his shopping list: from Coca-Cola to California Zinfandel wine to almonds. He replaced them with products from Europe and other countries.
“ Trump really looks like a bully, trying to intimidate and coerce others to achieve his goals. I will stand against such things,” he said. For Mr. Hansen, the US is a bigger threat than Iran.
Several Facebook groups have been created to share ways to avoid American goods and find alternatives, with one group attracting more than 80,000 members.
In response, Denmark’s largest supermarket chain, Salling Group, has created a label to mark products made in Europe. CEO Anders Hagh stressed that this is not a boycott, but simply a way for customers to easily avoid American goods.
Tesla, the car company run by billionaire Elon Musk, has also been hit hard, with sales plummeting in Europe. In Toronto, Canada, Tesla has been excluded from a program to encourage the use of electric vehicles to protect the environment, while other electric car manufacturers will continue to receive subsidies until 2029.
"If you want to buy a Tesla, go ahead, but don't expect to get a subsidy from Canadian taxpayers," said Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow.
Many people want to quit Netflix, Uber and Airbnb because of Mr. Trump
It’s not just physical products that are being affected, digital services are also being affected. Many people are considering ditching Netflix, Uber and Airbnb because they believe these companies funded Mr. Trump’s election campaign.
Mr. Jens Olsen, a 66-year-old electrician, said that Mr. Trump’s policies have made the “Viking blood boil” in Denmark. Despite having dual American-Danish citizenship, he has decided to give up American products, even considering replacing his $10,000 DeWalt power tools, even though it would cost more.
"I'm 66 years old and I've never seen Danes so angry," said Mr. Jens.
