The genesis of digital technology
After the renovation period, at the end of November 2023, Hoi An City inaugurated the Hoi An Prison relic exhibition. With more than 200 images, documents, and artifacts covering the historical topics of the prison's formation; the enemy's crimes; the daily life and struggles of compatriots and revolutionary soldiers captured and imprisoned by the enemy... Hoi An Prison has become a destination for many domestic and foreign tourists.
Visiting the prison, visitors can not only feel the history through the images and exhibits, but can also understand more deeply the indomitable fighting spirit of revolutionary soldiers through scanning the QR code.
On December 2, 2021, the Prime Minister issued Decision 2026 approving the Program for Digitizing Vietnamese Cultural Heritage for the 2021-2030 period.
The goal is to build a national database system on cultural heritage on a unified digital technology platform, serving the work of archiving, managing, researching, preserving, exploiting, promoting heritage, and promoting sustainable tourism development.
In Quang Nam, a few years ago, the culture and tourism sector also implemented digitalization, creating data for some relics such as building digital maps, connecting natural, cultural, revolutionary, and craft village tourist attractions... aiming to integrate and build a VR 360 virtual reality system... But with historical revolutionary relics, the digitalization process is quite slow or at a basic level such as creating GIS maps and pasting QR codes.
According to Dr. Le Thi Ngoc Cam - lecturer at FPT University (Da Nang), the explosion of the 4.0 technology revolution has affected the travel trends of many tourists. Therefore, digitizing relics to serve the conservation and development of tourism is an issue that the cultural tourism industry needs to consider. This requires precise and interdisciplinary cooperation in 4 stages: digitization; storage and management stage; restoration stage and finally diverse experiences.
Smart travel integration
With hundreds of revolutionary relics of historical value, especially typical revolutionary bases, the application of digital technology in management, connection, and formation of attractive destinations is considered a trend to effectively promote the value of local relics.
In fact, in recent times, some relics and heritage sites in Quang Nam have begun to deploy digital technology products such as GIS application, 3D film making, VR360, digitizing artifacts, QR code pasting, etc. However, with historical revolutionary relics, they seem to be very limited, or even not deployed yet. Therefore, there needs to be a new and appropriate approach based on digital technology achievements to effectively promote the type of tourism returning to the source.
According to Mr. Dinh Hong An - Business Director, Digital Transformation Solutions Joint Stock Company, normally to digitize relics as a perfect "Metaverse" (virtual universe) will be based on 3 technology platforms.
The first is the VR360 experience space, with data collected from flycam and specialized shooting devices to build a realistic 360-degree view, combining AI technology for MCs to explain each location (in 2 languages: English - Vietnamese), creating a lively experience for visitors.
The second space is “Metaverse Spy” which is programmed with 3D spatial drawings based on the actual scale of the monument, allowing users to walk, interact, and even take pictures in the monument using an avatar character instead of representing it.
Third, the “3D Map” is built with the actual scale and location of the relic for visitors to easily use. The locations of the relic will be digitized and can be integrated into the Quang Nam tourism website or other promotional channels. Users can easily experience every place of the relic through computers, smartphones, etc.
Mr. Van Ba Son - Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism affirmed that applying digital technology to tourism types, especially origin tourism, is always an issue of concern to the Quang Nam tourism industry.
This aims to create a large and diverse tourism space, reducing pressure on the province's tourism centers such as Hoi An and Dong Duy Xuyen. At the same time, creating a source of connecting data to help businesses and tourists easily learn and experience. However, this process must take place step by step because it depends on many factors and takes a lot of time.
